Unfortunately, winter is far from over (Punxsutawney Phil confirmed another 6 weeks of winter this morning) and we have another storm coming to us today. And now we have another reason to cringe! We just learned about another pitfall of those dreaded ice dams…Termites! Because of prolonged cold, snow and ice, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) cautions homeowners that ice dams create the perfect environment for termites. I know what you’re thinking….ok, water pouring down my walls and windows and now I need to worry about termites? Yep!.
As you may know, ice dams are a layer of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining properly. The melting snow seeps back up behind this dam and leaks into your home. If you don’t have Ice & water shield under your roof shingles this causes water damage to walls, ceilings, and insulation. These damp areas provide enough moisture to attract termites that will start to emerge at the first sign of spring. The first day of spring is in 48 days…but who is counting lol!
The reason for concern is that termites, aka silent destroyers, usually go unnoticed until significant structural damage to the home occurs and its not normally covered by homeowner’s insurance.
Don’t wait until the ground thaws out to let these pests do their damage to your home. Take these necessary steps to ensure winter doesn’t get the best of your home.
To prevent ice dams and termite infestations:
1. Contact a licensed roofer to promptly clear snow off of your roof before it freezes and becomes harder to remove.
2. Install at least 6’ of Ice & Water Shield under your roofing shingles.
3. Clean out gutters to ensure proper drainage.
4. Make sure your attic is properly insulated to keep your attic cool and to not waste money on your energy bills.
5. Make sure you have proper intake and install proper ventilation under your eaves to circulate cold air.
6. Make sure you have proper flashing around your chimney, dormers and sidewalls to prevent leaks.
7. Replace rotted roof shingles.
8. Seal air leakage areas around recessed lighting cans, electrical cables and vent pipes.
