OUR REVIEWS
Years ago, Stephanie the owner of coastal windows and I were in a BNI networking group together. So when I started to inquire about windows I knew Coastal would be a good start. Met with Ross from Coastal Windows for a quote. Ross was on time, professional, not pushy, knowledgeable and he has a great presence overall. He believes in the quality of his product and has samples to show me. Great experience!
6/18/2022 We met with Mark Marfione at Coastal Windows back in October when we purchased our new home. At the time we were looking at potential cost of replacing windows and also wanted to know the cost of siding due the state of both items when we bought the home. Mark was very friendly and spent the time to go through all options for both projects including showing us a 3d modeling of what the final result would look like. Unfortunately at the time we could only go forward with windows due to overall cost. The process could not have been smoother and the new windows were scheduled and installed (albeit a few months after we met due to the ongoing supply chain challenges). The new windows have made an immediate difference in our energy costs and we couldn't be happier.
But wait...there is more...
After the installation, Mark kept in touch with us and was able to put a new siding offer on the table that was more in line with our budget (with financing) and we ended up agreeing to that project as well. Mark came back to the house and we signed papers and look forward to starting that project in the near future.
Mark was an absolute pleasure to work with and took the time to ensure we were satisfied customers. We feel like we are in good hands with Coastal Windows & Exteriors and Mark is a big part of the reason why. I would recommend them to anyone looking for windows and other exterior work.
After securing a number of quotes, we had Coastal install vinyl siding on our house. Mark led us through the process and installed confidence in the company, the quality of the products used, and the process. He was patient, professional, and responsive without a hard sell approach, which was much appreciated.
We are very pleased with the result, and our interaction with everyone from Coastal has been very positive. The installation crew is extremely hard working, quick, and professional. The problem-solving attitude of the staff reflects well on the company.

6/10/2022We worked with Jim Faro. Jim was really helpful and didn't pressure us. His goal was to make sure we knew what options were available to us and we were confident in our decisions. If you have the chance to work with Jim, you will be in good hands with a good company behind him.
5/27/2022Met with James Faro at our house to look into a new roof and was blown away by him as a sales person. He was knowledgeable, professional and incredibly friendly. We met with another company to redo our roof and after meeting with Jim from coastal windows and exteriors we could never go with anyone else. Bravo to this company for hiring the right people for the job!
5/24/2022 After noticing some impressive exterior improvements on a friends house, I reached out and was referred to Coastal Windows & Exteriors. I was able to schedule a home estimate the next day with Tim and Terry. Tim and Terry were on time, knowledgeable, and accommodating. They have been very helpful and responsive to our requests, including immediately working with us on some changes after the initial estimate.
We are looking forward to seeing the finished product and will update here once the project is complete.
Tim and Terry visited us to give a quote on two exterior doors. They arrived on time and were incredibly helpful! At the end of their visit I had a good understanding of the company, the service I would receive as a customer, the product and the price. They were efficient and knowledgeable. I’d highly recommend Coastal Windows & Exteriors to anyone in the surrounding area.

4/24/2022This was a good company to work with for my single window and 3 panel patio slider. They gave a realistic estimate on delivery and met that goal. They were responsive to my queries during the process, too. The workers arrived on time, worked non-stop, finished the work within the estimated time, were respectful of our space, cleaned up after their work, and when done reviewed with us pertinent information on the window and slider. It's all good!
3/24/2022I have ordered from Coastal Windows before. While the product and installation were all great the delivery was AWFUL. In fairness, though, that might have been OK now because COVID has ruined worldwide shipping; however, the same mix-up occurred the last time. The company apologized as it had to re-order the correct windows. On the BRIGHT side the windows are greater. They deaden outside noise. They insulate better than my previous 25 year old Andersen windows. I did look at Pella but I didn't like its pricing for wood trim.Life is all about compromises, dooohhh.
3/24/2022We have had a great experience working with Tim & Terry at Coastal Windows and Exteriors on our potential siding project. We recently purchased a cape-style home and have been exploring replacing our current weathered red cedar shingle siding with a fiber cement product. Tim & Terry came to our house twice to walk us through our options and show us samples. They have been extremely patient with us as we worked through our own decision-making process -- we never felt rushed or pushed to make a decision (as so often is the case). Tim and Terry also went above and beyond to provide guidance and offer creative solutions in light of our budget and style preferences -- making sure that we were fully informed about all of our options every step of the way. While we are currently finalizing a few renovation details before proceeding with siding, we could not say enough good things about the customer service we have received thus far from Tim and Terry at Coastal Windows & Exteriors. Thanks, Tim and Terry!
3/24/2022After requesting a window replacement quote online, I was called within the same day to schedule an appointment for a quote within the same week. Very responsive and quick! The two people who came to prepare the quote were able to show me samples, discuss materials, and provide the quote that same very day. I really appreciated the speed and efficiency. I am still seeking other quotes so I can’t judge any work at this time.
3/24/2022I am doing an add-on to my old house that's been in the family for years. Want to bring it back to life. Last step will be siding and windows. Dan came to my house and was very informative about Hardie siding and windows and helped me visualize the whole project. I will definitely be calling Coastal when this first step is complete.
3/24/2022Jim was amazing! He arrived early and eager for our quote appointment. We didn’t think we could afford good quality windows and professional service, and Jim provided alternative design options that gave us exactly what we needed. He’s thorough and takes the time to explain to you what things cost, why and how you can save. He had actual sample windows to show us which was incredibly helpful to visualize the look and quality of what the finished work might be. We look forward to working with them and hope to post a review of the finished work soon!
2/24/2022We have been a customer of Coastal Windows and Exteriors for many years. Their products and services are outstanding! The windows, roof, and door installed at our home improved our energy savings and comfort, as well as dramatically dressed up the exterior curb appeal. In addition, their employees are knowledgeable, professional, and pleasant to be around. However, what makes this company different is how they respond when things do not go as planned. Every project has hiccups and Coastal responds better to these unexpected problems than most. Coastal has always made it right in the end! We appreciate the owners' strong belief in completing each project to our satisfaction and providing honest service long after the installation. We highly recommend Coastal Windows and Exteriors and their products.
2/24/2022We had our siding replaced by Coastal Windows & Exteriors and we love it. The quality of their job and the quick turnaround was great. Their workmanship has already been put to the test during our last winter storm , and the 70 mph wind gusts were no match for our new siding. We'd definitely hire them again for any future jobs that we might need in the future.
2/24/2022I had the pleasure of working with Terry and Tim on getting new windows on the first and second floor of my house. Both of them were on time and extremely professional and knowledgable.. They were friendly and truly listened to my needs. Both of them were able to answer every question I had and made sure I was getting the best deal possible. I HIGHLY recommend working with Terry and Tim and I am excited about my new windows. Thank you Tim and Terry!

2/24/2022Had a great experience with JimFaro stopping by to discuss potential options at my home. I have had a draft problem with most of my windows, Jim confirmed the issue. Also had a larger insulation issue he was able to identify and get me in touch with the proper people. That work took priority, but I know who I will be going to when I can have the window work done. Nothing but professional, highly recommended!
2/24/2022Cooper was our point of contact, his service was superb coupled with his knowledge of the high quality materials and manufacturing processes made the decision easy to move forward with a full house window replacement.Update, windows were installed and looked amazing! Joe and the team did a great job, thank you!
2/24/2022In November Jim Faro helped me get a new roof on the house. He was very professional and always answered my questions. The roofers were great. I have a small roof so it was done in a day including clean up. My roof looks amazing. I was so thrilled with the quality of work I chose Coastal Windows to do my siding. Again Jim helped me through the process, showed my all the parts and pieces that would be involved in residing the house, and even helped me with the loan application. He made sure I understood everything before I signed any of the paperwork. 10/10 I recommend Coastal Windows.
1/24/2022We needed a quote for our basement windows, our roof and sidings and with our busy schedule my wife and I we had to fit multiple contractors in a short time to see our porch, our siding and our windows. William impressed us with his professionalism, he went above and beyond giving us all his input, doing his presentation, showing us all the products. I will certainly be doing business with him.
1/24/2022This review is only for the sales part of the process since the windows haven't been installed yet. Jim Faro came out in mid-October to give us an estimate on replacing some of our windows and was wonderful. He was patient, kind, professional, explained everything in detail, and answered all of our questions. He wasn't pushy at all and even offered us alternatives to try to save us some money if we wanted, though we didn't go with his suggestions. Their price was similar to others and around what we expected it to be.We're still waiting for the windows to be installed so can't comment on the product itself or quality of labor/install. Estimated start date had been end of Dec. We will update once complete.
1/24/2022Excellent experience from start to finish. Initial meeting went great and was informative of what to expect. Installation likewise was excellent. The old roof had more damage than first suspected but was still taken care of within a day. Everyone was professional and great to work with on this project. Will definitely use again for future projects.
1/24/2022This rating is up through the sales process as the work has not been initiated yet. I will revisit the review when the job is complete. We are embarking on a large project with Coastal to put up Hardie Board on our home and to replace all trim, soffit, etc. The siding requires specialized expertise and knowledge. Jim Faro is the product specialist we worked with and he brought great experience to the planning. I am confident that he gave great advice and that we are set up for a successful project.
12/24/2021was looking for quotes on siding for my home. called numerous company's with no call backs. I came across Coastal Windows & Exteriors advertiment on Facebook. Took a look on their website and read some reviews about this company. I got in touch with their online personal on a Sunday. Then got a call on Tueaday to have someone come out and take pictures and measurements. The same day Tim & Terry came out with an estimate for the siding. They were both very professional and friendly. I was very appreciative of them coming out and giving me an eatimate. I HIGHLY recommend Coastal Windows & Exteriors!
12/24/2021This is our 2nd time working with Coastal Windows, and each experience has been an absolute pleasure. The professional staff comes to the house and listens to our needs and provides helpful suggestions. Even the installer who comes out and does the final measurement is super. Very courteous and the quality of the product is excellent. It helps that their pricing is very competitive, and if we have future needs to improve our home Coastal Windows & Exteriors will be our first call.
11/24/2021From the moment we met Tim and Terry we knew this is the kind of company we wanted to work with. They came to our home to help us make a decision on a new roof. They were very knowledgeable and I might add very funny. We have signed with CWE and ar waiting for our new roof to be be put on. Thank you again Tim and Terry for making it so easy 🙂
11/24/2021I reached out to Costal Window and Exterior for a roof replacement. I had an appointment with Jim Faro the next day. Very professional, took measurements and showed me every layer of new product that would be going on my roof once they stripped the old shingles and such off. All in the same visit. I was given two quotes for my roof as I was unsure how big a project I wanted to make it. Jim worked with me to make sure I got what I wanted is working with me still to make sure my new roof goes on ASAP and I have some pretty bad damage from recent storms. I highly recommend Jim and Coastal Windows, I will be returning when its time to do siding!
11/24/2021 I recently had my home stripped and sided by Coastal Windows and Exteriors.
From start to finish, they were great..
The salesman that came to my home was not pushy and answered all of our questions and concerns.
The crew that did the work where great, The job site was cleaned daily .
Overall, the quality, speed and workmanship was A+.
In dealing with the ownership about a material overage, the issue was handled swiftly, politely and to my satisfaction.
I would highly recommend this company to other
ADDENDUM: The siding is done and what a great job! The crew were friendly and professional, got the entire house resided in under a week! When they were finished, there was a slight adjustment we wanted, and they came back and handled it in an afternoon. Fantastic work! We've gotten numerous compliments on how our house looks now.We were looking to get the siding replaced on our house. We had two companies take a look and both gave about the same estimate, but Coastal went above and beyond to help us make it happen. When we weren't sure how we could afford it, their representatives pointed us toward refinancing, gave us contacts to get it done, and made sure we were okay every step of the way.But beyond that, they're also just incredibly friendly while still maintaining a great professional attitude. Tim and Terry were our representatives, and they made us feel listened to. They heard what we wanted, and helped us find a way to make it happen. When they left after our first meeting, we actually knew we could get good siding that would protect our home for decades to come and look nice doing it, and we wouldn't be drowning in debt afterward.
10/24/2021We have been working on selecting new windows with Jim Faro from Coastal for a number of weeks now and have decided to move forward with the installation of 23 new windows. Jim is very professional and knowledgeable about his products. He also doesn't mind cracking a few jokes every now and then too which is always good. Had a great experience with Jim and Coastal so far and would recommend you give them a call.
10/24/2021While waiting for our Windows to be installed. So far we were very happy with the salesman’s Cooper Knights. He was a knowledgeable sales person, professional, punctual and responsive. He was very patient and nice to explain or answer all my questions. We are looking forward to see our new Windows soon.
10/24/2021This is a company that definitely cares about their customers. Our salesman was very professional, friendly and informative with all options available and worked with us to try to get the job done within our timeframe which was a huge help.Having worked for a local business that survived on its quality of customer service, I highly recommend Coastal.
10/24/2021While I'm waiting to have the windows installed, so far, the sales experience has been great. Dan knew everything about their windows, and didn't try to pressure me to get unnecessary upgrades. He answered my long list of questions that I sent him over several days. He responded quickly and thoroughly. I'm looking forward to the new windows!
10/24/2021Our experience with Coastal W & E has been wonderful! From the time my wife made the contact phone call- a live, professional, pleasant, person answered the call and set up an appointment for the very next day, to meeting Tim and Terry. Tim and Terry measured our home for siding and discussed our options, the process, and pricing. They explained everything completely and answered all our questions. They made it so easy! We also decided to update two windows. We met Joe when he came to measure the windows to ensure a smooth installation. He was a very nice gentleman and we feel confident we have chosen the perfect company to address our home's siding needs!
10/24/2021I can only speak (so far) to the sales experience, which was positive and low pressure. We worked with Terrance and Tim, who were very easy to work with, knew everything about their products and weren't trying to oversell or upsell us on stuff we didn't need. We ordered the windows and are just looking forward install now!
9/24/2021My windows are not installed as of yet, but my experience with both Terry O'Connor and Tim Alcott were great. Both were professional, friendly and very knowledgeable. Also, both were very clear in explaining the process, cost, window warranties and timeline. I'm very happy with my purchase and I can't wait to see my new windows!!!!.
6/24/2021We called Coastal Windows & Exteriors to replace the siding and some windows on our house. Tim and Terry were here on time and prepared. They went over all the options and explained every detail. They are knowledgeable, patient and easy to talk to. Tim and Terry are a great representation of the company. We are waiting for the install and I'm sure that will go just as smoothly as the consultation did. I can't wait for our new look!
6/24/2021Terry O'Connor and Tim Allcott have been great to work with. They came up from Mass to Derry, NH to meet with us and were very thorough in providing us with lots of options on siding and the associated prices on the spot. We have emailed them with a few changes and they respond right away. We are due to have our siding installed in about a week and I suspect with all the positive feedback we have seen online, and our interaction so far, that we will continue to be impressed with the company overall. We look forward to our house transformation and will complete the review when the job is done .
6/24/2021Emily has been a pleasure to work with! She's very attentive, punctual and very detailed oriented. She's been very easy to work with and has been a great partner in our project. I highly recommend Emily and the rest of the team at Coastal Windows & Exteriors for your next project!
6/24/2021We love our new windows! We were very happy with all aspects of the process and with every member of the staff at Coastal Windows. The staff were knowledgeable, courteous, and responsive. The installers followed the social distancing safety guidelines, worked efficiently, and showed pride in their work. The new windows for our kitchen are beautiful and completely open up the room. We would highly recommend Coastal Windows!
6/24/2021We had the pleasure of having Coastal Windows & Exteriors install vinyl siding and replace two windows. We got to meet with David himself to go over everything, was able to answer all of our questions. Working with Stephanie to set up the schedule for everything was a breeze, she was super responsive and even when we ordered custom shutters that took a little longer to get from the manufacturer; she still made sure to reach out with updates along the way. Now that everything is installed and complete we can't thank Waldir and his team enough, they were all very professional, cleaned up after themselves and left our house looking amazing. 10/10 would recommend or use again.
6/24/2021My wife and I contacted Coastal Windows to talk about siding our house and replace one window at our home and a large 3 bay window at my mother's home. Tim and Terry showed up on a Saturday and were both extremely knowledgeable, friendly and kind. They stayed for as long as we wanted to answer all of our questions. They were the first company that I ever hired on a first impression and how courteous they were. The house looks fantastic. Everyone that I know including neighbors and friends have commented on how great the house looks. One neighbor even thanked me for increasing his property value because of how the house looks. A 2 week job turned into 5 days. My wife could not believe how hard the installers worked and quickly they finished the job. I would definitely recommend Coastal Windows & Doors.Jim Botsolis
6/24/2021We met with Emily after scheduling an appointment to discuss replacing some windows & updating our old rotted exterior with vinyl siding. Emily arrived on time, was courteous (wore a mask & asked if she needed to remove her shoes-especially because it was rainy and muddy outside). She answered EVERY single question we asked (and there were a lot). She was patient, thorough, informative and very professional. The products they offer are by far the best and worth the investment to make our house stand the test of time. I highly recommend Coastal Windows & Exteriors for their attentive service, quality of product and professional team. Thank you Emily for all your patience and thorough exploration of options to make the right choice on materials!
6/24/2021Coastal Windows is hands down the most courteous, professional, and attentive business we have worked with since we bought our fixer upper. Our initial home visit by Tim & Terry told us everything we had to know about whether or not Coastal Windows was the right choice. They were right on time, knowledgeable, and genuinely excited for the work we were planning on doing together. They have kept great contact with us since, even sending us a personalized handwritten Christmas card. That was awesome! I cannot wait to see their good work come to fruition when the windows get installed.
6/24/2021I've contacted Coastal twice for help with my house and both times they were extremely honest, helpful and responsive! The first time was to get an estimate for siding and to replace a window. I was told that I didn't actually need siding (yet) and the window that was broken should actually be under manufacturers warantee and the sash could be replaced for free! (This was after being told by another person that I needed to replace my siding asap and the window would only cost an additional $600!) Based on the trust they built the first time, I called them again for porch windows (which most certainly need replacing!). Tim A. and Terry O. came out and both were just as fantastic as the first person! They explained everything, provided a lot of info I hadn't known, gave a very fair price and were incredibly responsive through the whole process! 5 out of 5 would use them again!
6/24/2021Terry O'Connor and Tim Allcott were great. They were very thorough in explaining the process, cost, construction, and final look. They were very responsive throughout the process following up with me regularly to make sure everything was going according to plan and that I was happy with my purchase. I would definitely use Coastal Windows and Exterior again.
6/24/2021I used Coastal Windows & Exteriors to put new siding on my house and install a new front door. Emily came to my house to go over the project with me. She helped me pick out the right siding and shutters even calling the owner of the company to discuss what color would match my roof. Emily is great very personable and she cares about you the customer. I met with Jeffrey and Emily to plan what I wanted for my door and they both helped me pick out and design my door. My house looks fantastic! It looks like a brand new house. The crew were fantastic and helped you with all your questions and quickly resolved any issues. The owners of the company David & Stephanie get involved and want you to be satisfied! The inside trim on my door was supposed to be desert sand and it was installed white and I wanted it to match my trim on my windows and doors. Emily came over to asess and fix the issue, matching the paint and going to sherwin williams to get the paint. She then painted the trim to match my doors. I can't say enough about this company! My light had to be moved to the opposite side of my front door so the shutters could fit. David coordinated their electrician to come and rewire. If you are thinking about having new siding, windows or doors installed you should definitely give this company a call.Donna Thompson
6/24/2021I haven't yet had the installation of my new siding and windows, but I've had the most wonderful experience with Coastal's courteous staff so far. Tim Alcott came to my house on three different occasions to talk to me about their products and services, and was friendly, knowledgeable and responsive. I really felt like he wanted to make sure I got exactly what I wanted. (The follow up thank you note via snail mail was a special touch!) Tim was a great introduction to this company - looking forward to my finished product soon!
6/24/2021Professional, timely, and quality is how I'd describe my window repair/install work completed by coastal. Every step of the process was communicated well and the job was done in a day. There was some rot that had us thinking the worst but the installers at coastal cleaned it right out and made the house look immensely better with the updated vinyl trim. We highly recommend this excellent, reliable, local company!
6/24/2021I had agreat experience with Coastal Windows when I had them install the windows on the first floor and for that reason I called them again when I was ready to install the ones on the second floor of my home. The installers arrived on time, wore their masks and maintained social distance, left everything as cleaned as they found it and were very professional overall. I recommend Coastal Windows for your windows job!
6/24/2021We had all the windows in our condo replaced by coastal. They did a good job with installation and cleanup. The windows that got delivered by the manufacturer where not exactly what we order but coastal worked with us and made it right. They also came back to repair something that we weren't happy with and that also went well. Subsequently they contacted us to inquire if all was satisfactory and to inform us that we can call anytime if something comes up. Their whole staff is very friendly and accommodating . We would highly recommend coastal for all your window needs. They're fair priced, friendly, and very accommodating. They kept us informed throughout the whole process from order to installation and after. Good people good work and fair price. What more could you ask for? Thanks
6/24/2021Tim and Terry were an amazing team. They came out and gave us a wonderful overview of the siding products and answered all of our questions. They were patient and attentive in their follow through as well. Looking forward to working with them to give our old antique home a face lift!
6/24/2021Tim and Terry came to our home and explained in detail the windows we were interested in purchasing. They went over company information, how the product is manufactured and the way it will be installed. They were punctual and professional - as well as funny. They were very easy to work with. We look forward to working with Coastal.
6/24/2021We hired Coastal Windows @ Exteriors off from their Facebook ad. We had a house we were remodeling and our timeline had run out to to do all the work. They stepped in and provided accurate measurements and descriptions of the work and set a timeline that was reasonable for the work to be completed. We had a couple of hiccups when our first choice of siding became unavailable and then the same thing happened with the second choice. The factories closed down due to COVID issues. Coastal Windows & Exteriors stepped right up, found a new and better product and finished the work on-time and on budget. We would recommend you call them first for your next project!
6/24/2021We recently met with Tim and Terry of Coastal Windows and Exteriors about replacing some windows and siding our two family home. They were both very friendly and accommodating of our time. They went through all the details of the project and what to expect. We had some particular requests for the look of the overall project and they answered all our questions. They were professional and knowledgable and because of their service, we went ahead with the project. We look forward to having our siding and windows completed soon. Thank you!
6/24/2021We received three bids for replacing the siding on our house. We chose Coastal not only for their competitive price but were impressed by the experience and knowledge of representatives Terry O'Connor and Tim Allcott. As the project is still underway, we look forward to working with Terry and Tim and the crew at Coastal. Can't wait to see our 100 yr old house become new again!
6/24/2021I had a great experience with Zach Barry and David Vanderbilt at Coastal. As a Realtor, I always appreciate high quality service providers. My client needed to have some bricks "anchored" on their home and it was recommended the owners put siding over these bricks. I'm not sure how I got their name, but Coastal was the only siding company who would do this job, as they'd done it successfully before. They did an amazing job! Delivery, scheduling, installation, clean up... all of it was great. Zach was conscientious about keeping me informed of any changes. He was professional, knowledgeable, and pleasant to work with. David followed up as well, and I felt like I had a team behind me. Would definitely recommend them again!
6/24/2020I have been finding it a bit overwhelming to take care of my almost 20 year old house. I am so pleased to have found a company that seems to care about my needs and my complete understanding of the project. I am impressed with their professionalism, knowledge, and helpfulness, as well as with the quality of their product. I asked for and received valuable advice even a bit beyond the scope of the project. The price was very fair for the high quality of the doors and windows (and was lower than other quotes I received). I would definitely recommend consulting Coastal Windows and Exteriors on any door or window project. They do high quality work.
6/24/2020I had a unique opportunity to watch 2 different neighbors getting new roofs across the street. It was clear to me that Neighbor A was getting a better job. That's why I called Coastal when it was time to replace my roof. Quality to me is the most important criteria. I chose GAF's Timberline Ultra HD with StainGuard Plus which has a new embedded resistant treatment for Blue/Green Algae. The whole experience was top notch. Frank in sales was very knowledgeable, genuine and remained on-site during the installation. The entire crew was more than competent and experienced in their trade. They got every little detail attended to. They complied with OSHA standards on my steep roof. They took care of my shrubs and lawn as if it was their own. I highly recommend Coastal Windows & Exteriors - without a doubt.
6/24/2020After putting off window replacement for years, I found these guys online. The friendly professional sales rep came to my house, showing me all my options with full specs. The precision construction & high-tech materials used let me know these were the best quality windows I've seen. I chose triple-pane, argon-krypton gas-filled, with a UV-tint. The quote was very reasonable. I didn't need to look any further. The 3 installers came out on time, courteous, respectful, very competent experienced professionals. They were very accommodating to my needs. In 1 full day, they installed 13 double-hung windows, each one custom made with precision and a nice snug fit, without disturbing the interior trim. After every window was installed, they cleaned the area and vacuumed well. Every window was installed beautifully, better than I could have imagined. I was shown the proper closure of the sashes for best seal, and the beautifully engineered twin locks, effortless tilt-to-clean operation. I am so glad I got the UV tint since I get migraines from UV glare. It also keeps the house cooler in summer. The house is much tighter, even on gusty days, these windows are solid. In the 3-yrs I've had these, no problems whatsoever. I would hire Coastal again without hesitation. Great people, Highly recommended.
6/24/2020Coastal Windows & Exteriors did an amazing job on our home. We had the entire roof done, which came out beautifully, and had my siding completely replaced as well. They were meticulous and detail oriented. The sales person Jeff was awesome and I can’t say enough about Stephanie, the owner who I feel I personally know now. I am very happy with the updated exterior of our home and my family appreciates the great work, personal attention and effort that was put in. Thanks again Coastal!
6/24/2020Coastal Windows & Exteriors replaced my roof. They met with me and discussed options and pricing. About a week after signing the contract, we had a big rainstorm and I had water running down an interior wall. I called them and they were there within an hour to tarp the roof at no extra charge. When they did the replacement, it was done in a day. They left my house and yard cleaned up and the roof has been excellent.
6/24/2020The siding installers were efficient, meticulous in their workmanship and worksite was cleaned after each work day. Igor and crew set the standard other contractors should strive for. I would highly recommend them. The Coastal window installers like wise were as good as the siding installers. Wife and I very satisfied with Coastal Windows and Exteriors.
6/24/2020I met with Lauren Holbrook who gave me the run down of everything with the windows. Although I didn’t purchase anything due to my budget, she was great, thoroughly explained things to me, and the differences between the windows Offered. In addition, Lauren understood my situation and didn’t try and force me to buy something, which I appreciated.
6/24/2020i just signed a contract to have siding and windows installed in my house. Lauren Holbrook was fantastic. She answered all of our questions, was very flexible with meeting times. She graciously accomodated my last minute request to meet at a different location to sign and go over the contract. Lauren is very professional, patient, lovely to work with. She hasset the bar very high for the rest of the staff. I look forward to working with the rest of the Coastal team.
6/24/2020All in all … great experience . A couple of small glitches that can happen with any type of installation purchase. I will say after a couple of minor hiccups everything was fixed and made right. At the end of the day, we are very happy with our new windows. A special shout out to Mike and his crew for a great experience with the installation .
6/24/2020I had never heard of Coastal Windows until I saw them in Home Advisor. The rating that they were given by customers was impressive, so I contacted them and two other window suppliers. Coastal's sales presentation was very impressive, as was their cost estimate. They replaced 8 Andersen crank-out windows. These windows are high quality, and the installers are top rate. I am completely satisfied and would recommend Coastal to anyone.
6/24/2020In the service industry myself, Coastal Windows and Exteriors has provided us with a good experience. We are engaged to replace the roof, install vinyl siding, and replace a bay window. Lauren is very knowledgeable about the products, easy to work with, and accommodating. We had our roof replaced this past week and the crew was thorough and efficient. Based on our experience so far, we would recommend Coastal Windows and Exteriors to anyone looking to improve their home.
6/24/2020My fiancé and I bought our first home 8 months ago. Our home was built in 1920 and has their original windows, so they definetely needed a remodel. Coastal Windows was recommended to us through Mass Save. Lauren came out and gave us a quote. She provided us with so much knowledge on the windows, that we knew we should go ahead with the job through their company. We have been kept informed throughout the process and appreciate the company working with us to ensure our satisfaction. The windows were installed today and we love them! Highly recommended!
6/24/2020There was a slight delay in the start date of the job. However it was not a major problem. Steve Hansen was very good in contacting me and keeping me apprised on everything. The workers were very efficient and professional. Work was done in one day as promised. The workers cleaned up everything very well.I have one concern regarding the gutters which were not replaced, I believe the top cap is pulled back too far. Birds are getting into the gutter. The gutter is a product that prevents leaves and debris from getting in. I will have the gutter company come out and inspect them. I will contact you if there is a problem.
6/24/2020The sales person was very informative and put a lot of detail into the presentation. She gave a lot of different options and ideas for me to consider. She was also very patient and quick to answer my multitude of questions in regards to what I wanted to get done. It was a very positive experience and I look forward to having my siding and doors installed!
6/24/2020What do you do when you need new windows, siding, and doors? You call Coastal Windows of course! When my wife and I moved into our house we knew at some point this would all need to be done. The doors were so poorly sealed you could see light all around the edges. On windy days our old windows sounded like a death metal drummer practicing his double bass and there was enough draft to fly a kite. Our shake siding was starting to break and the paint was peeling. So we had a few choices, either be 'that' house in our pretty nice neighborhood or fix up the place. Now parking a bunch of rusty 1980's camaro's on the front lawn with no wheels and resting on cinder blocks next to a few weather beaten torn up tarps flapping in the wind would have completed our look but I had no desire to grow a mullet and I don't think Larry the Cable guy is funny so we went the opposite way.We reached out to Coastal Windows and they sent forth Esther to tell us all about all the cool things we needed to do just in case MTV Cribs ever came back on the air. Esther gave us tons of options and helped us all along the way. We were explained and shown the differences in windows, sidings, and doors and learned a lot along the way. For siding we went with a shake design that looks about as real as you can get. With the windows we went with some filled with Krypton gas, Esther says this is the best for insulation but I did it because I really don't trust Superman, and we capped it off with a sweet new front door, back door, and rear storm door into the mud room. When Coastal Windows got going with construction they were quick and efficient, from stripping the house to getting everything new on it took about a week. Coastal Windows never left us with any holes overnight, if a window was removed it was immediately replaced and the same with the doors. Their contractors also measured multiple times before ordering anything so there were no wrong sizes or delays. The best part is everything carries a life guarantee. Now I have to start eating more vegetables and actually using the treadmill that holds my laundry so I can really take advantage of this! If you're thinking about going somewhere besides Coastal Windows just remember this little piece of advice...don't.
6/24/2019I had two custom replacement windows installed last year from Coastal Windows and had a very positive experience with everyone involved. They are beautiful and have kept the architectural integrity of the house intact. The installation was pretty quick and the installer consulted with me when an unexpected snag popped up to my complete satisfaction.I also recently had two steel replacement doors installed from them and loved the beautiful paneling and attention to detail. The installers were very professional, showed up on time and explained the process thoroughly. They were quick to resolve any issues along the way, left the area in clean and proper order and made sure I was satisfied before leaving. My sales people have very accommodating throughout the entire process. They were helpful in making recommendations that suited my needs and were always prompt to find answers and solutions. Not one of the salespersons used any pressure which I really appreciated as it would be a deal breaker for me. . Coastal Windows is a bit pricey but I have come to rely on them due to the quality of their work.I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for exterior remodeling as I am once again having them vinyl side my house with complete confidence.
6/24/2019My wife and just purchased our first home 3 years ago in the fall. As winter approached and it got colder we decided the windows in our house were less than ideal. We bit the bullet our second year and searched far and wide for a reliable company that could replace our old windows. We eventually choose Coastal Windows and set up a time for them to come out and give us an estimate. After a short while they gave us a quote which was on the higher end of what we expected but still pretty fair. We decided to do just our first floor for now then see how things went, then do our second floor later. Long story short, these guys were super friendly, reliable, and knowledgeable. The whole process went very smoothly and they seemed like they genuinely cared about the project. The best part was we saved a few hundred dollars in heating costs with only the first floor windows replaced! This year we will definitely be doing our upstairs with them. These guys are the real deal and you get what you pay for, I’m one happy customer.
6/24/2019We purchased our house last year newly renovated. Unfortunately, they did not upgrade the door. We had probably the worst, builder grade door you can imagine. You could see the light coming in around the frame, the door would be hot or cold to the touch and it did not shut properly. To top it off, it had no dead bolt!My husband and I were very impressed with the entire process of Coastal Windows & Exteriors. We met at our home with Donna, who helped us choose the right door for our space. Once the door was installed it looked exactly as described, if not better. The installer, Mike, did a fantastic job. You can definitely tell that this door was not purchased at Home Depot or Lowes, and was installed by a professional. The door shuts tightly, has an amazing color and comes with a lifetime guarantee. The service of Coastal Windows is definitely worth the price and I would recommend them to anyone!
6/24/2018I had my windows replaced by Coastal Windows I Exteriors, Inc. in December. They delivered on every aspect of the process and communicate with me every step (ordering windows, installation dates, etc. of the way. I chose them from recommendation on Next Door. The installers were prompt, friendly, efficient and respectful of my property. The finish work and chalking around the windows were expertly done. They were nice to my dog too! The windows are amazing! I see a big difference in noise reduction and temperature. I have a room that was converted from the garage and it was always so cold. Huge difference with the replaced windows and slider!! The lifetime warranties are great too!. I am so thrilled with new windows. I didn't even mentioned how easy to clean they are too! I am completely satisfied and would highly recommend Coastal windows. Jan Brophy, Portsmouth NH
6/24/2017This is a great, true story: my wife and I had had quite a few windows replaced by Next Step Living, a large company which then suddenly went out of business, literally overnight (?!)First, Coastal Windows came to the rescue by stepping in and taking over the N.S.L. warranties. We learned of this in a letter, in which they also offered to come and give a free estimate for any work Next Step hadn't done. We were more than pleased to invite them over, as you can imagine!Half the job (very large) remained to be done, and Coastal took care of it-- with the highest level of professionalism and friendliness. This is an exceptionally well-run company, and we give them the highest possible ratings...plus bonus points, if they exist. Thank you, Coastal!!!
6/24/2017The sales process was like taking a class in window technology. We felt very reassured that we were making the right choice for our house and that the price was right for the quality. The only issue we had was scheduling the install (twice delayed, once unavoidable) which made the process slightly more difficult but even then their back office was communicative throughout and made a concerted effort to get it right following the mix-up. The install took less than a full day (for 6 windows) and the technicians were spotlessly clean and did a great job. We are super happy with our new windows: after living on a busy street in the city for 7 years, the peace and quiet these windows provide has made an enormous difference in our home. Very happy with the product and service provided and rest assured with the lifetime guarantee that we will remain satisfied.
6/24/2017Excellent support from beginning to end. All the teams were professional ( windows, siding and doors). I can definitely tell the difference in how quite my home is since i live on a busy street. The windows, doors and siding turned out exactly the way i wanted. My Neighbors and other people from the community stop and tell me daily how great the home looks, i think that says it all. I anticipate heat savings this year once this cold weather rolls in.
6/24/2017We worked with Coastal for our roofing and siding. They consistently got great reviews for reliability and quality of work and we were looking for peace of mind when doing upgrades on our first house . They lived up to to their reviews. We are very happy with the way both the new roof and the siding turned out. We certainly have peace of mind going into the winter knowing the are home is well protected with the high quality of work.
6/24/2017We had a great experience with Coastal. We had 4 new windows installed by them and they were extremely easy to work with from start to finish. The guys who came to do the installation were quick, but did a fantastic job. The windows are a huge improvement! I think their prices are higher than some, but the windows themselves are great and the customer service left me feeling like I was in good hands. I feel as if I got good value for my money overall.
6/24/2017Great service!! We had 7 windows installed (3 in garage and 4 in an upstairs room). We opted for high efficiency windows and since getting them installed, we've notice a dramatic difference in the temperature in the room. In fact we even removed the window AC unit as it never gets too hot now. We will certainly go back to them for our other windows throughout the house.
6/24/2017Coastal Windows installed a new sliding glass door in my kitchen a month ago. They were very professional throughout the process, from initial product description and pricing through installation and clean-up. Great product, done quickly and efficiently with little mess, and made sure all was clean and working properly by the end. Very knowledgeable and efficient. Very pleased with the service and quality. Would recommend them highly.
6/24/2017Coastal Windows installed a sliding patio door for us last November. Two other companies had dropped the ball, and did not provide or install a door. Coastal Windows not only followed up, they got the job done when they said they would. My daughter's comment after the new door was installed was that she thought patio doors were always drafty. The new door is not, and it is due to the high quality of the door and the professional installation. I would recommend Coastal Windows unconditionally.
6/24/2017Coastal Windows & Exteriors installed a beautiful new front entry door and a new sliding glass door for our home. We are so pleased with their top quality products and their installation team was extremely professional and knowledgable. Will definitely recommend them to friends and family!
6/24/2017From start to finish on my recent new roof project, Coastal Windows and exteriors went above and beyond to get the job done quickly and correctly. From the start to finish they excelled in their communication from estimate to actual completion. They also went above and beyond to help me get it done in time for winter and worked hard to keep me within my budget. I highly recommend them and would use them again for future projects.
6/24/2016Coastal Windows replaced our gutters with leaf guard. The gutters are high quality but the amount of activity this year for gutters delayed installment about 6 weeks. The installation guy was very friendly and professional. The job was completed in two days. It was reported that there were blockages in our previous gutters-we requested a call back as to the location of the blockages but haven't heard back yet from anyone. Overall quality product with friendly but delayed service.

- Spring Roofing Q&A: New England EditionJune 25, 2022New England frequently experiences harsh winters that can test the resilience of our homes. When the temperature dips below freezing and snow blankets the landscape for extended periods of time, homeowners often find themselves with ice dams, leaky roofs, and other issues. The good news is that spring and summer are ideal times to schedule a roof replacement in New England. These are some common roofing questions to ask your roofing contractor, to ensure that you’re getting the best product possible. How do I Know I Need a New Roof? New roofing is one of the biggest investments any homeowner can make, but it’s also one of the smartest. A new quality roof can provide a significant return on investment while increasing the value of your home. Here are some signs it may be time for a new roof: Your Roof is Old (Really Old) Has it been a few decades since you’ve upgraded your roof? If so, it’s time to think about replacement. Premium quality shingles from Coastal Windows & Exteriors can last for life, but it’s important to keep tabs on the age of your roof. You also need to consider if your shingles are a single layer or if they were layered over older shingles, which can make a difference in terms of how long your roof will last. Your Shingles are Bucking and Curling The physical condition of your shingles is another key indicator for roof replacement. For example, shingles that are curling and bucking should be removed and replaced. This is a sign of sun damage and old age. Your Roof is Leaking One of the biggest signs that you need new roofing is leaks. When water is making its way into your home, it’s important to get to the root of the problem sooner rather than later. You’ll need to replace your roof to avoid water damage and even mold or mildew growth. Coastal Windows & Exteriors offers top-quality GAF roofing systems with an exceptional water barrier system. The underlayment is designed to keep water from reaching the inside of your home, providing an incredible barrier against water and ice. This is one of the best protective solutions for protecting your home against water damage. Your Roof had Ice Dams in the Winter The most common problem with snow and ice on the roof is ice dams; the build-up of ice at the edge of the roof. This is caused by melting snow and ice on the roof, which then freezes on the gutter system. Ice dams can lead to major problems like gutter damage, or even tearing off sections of your roof. Not only will your new roof system offer top performance, but it will also enhance your home’s curb appeal. There is a range of color options beyond standard black to give your home that WOW factor. Whether you’re looking for a contemporary, classic, or a transitional vibe, there is a roofing option for nearly every style. What is the Best Shingle Material for New England Homes? We are big asphalt advocates here at Coastal Windows & Exteriors. Asphalt is one of the best roof materials for several reasons. Asphalt shingles are a cost-effective option for roofing. If you need an upgrade without breaking the bank, asphalt is a no-brainer option. Energy Star-certified asphalt roofing helps lower your utility bills, especially shingles that are lighter in color. Asphalt roofing, when installed correctly, can take a beating from the elements. The asphalt shingles from Coastal Windows & Exteriors come with GAF’s unlimited wind speed warranty. Their wind-resistant performance begins with the installation of starter strip shingles, the first layer of shingles to go on your roof. Asphalt roofing is fast and easy to install, giving you a new durable roof sooner rather than later. Another advantage of choosing asphalt is the large variety of color options. While vinyl siding is one of the best ways to transform the exterior of your home, a new roof can truly help do the same. According to Better Homes & Gardens, a dark-colored roof will minimize your home’s size while downplaying the highest peaks of your roof. Light-colored roofing will make your home look bigger with a taller roof. Do I Need to Worry About Roof Ventilation? A high-quality roof with ridge vents can help keep your home ventilated. This wards off a lot of potential issues such as mold and mildew, indoor condensation, and even rotting wood beams in your attic. A well-ventilated roof also prolongs the life of your shingles while lowering utility bills. There are different styles of ridge vents available, including aluminum and shingle. You won’t find many performance differences between the two, but aesthetics are certainly a factor. Shingle ridge vents provide a more streamlined and finished appearance. Aluminum vents are prone to leaks since the fasteners are exposed. To prevent leaks with aluminum ridge vents, you’ll need to apply sealant around the fasteners on a regular basis, which is a lot of hassle for a less attractive roofing feature. As you’re exploring options for ridge vents, find a product that includes a baffle system. This essentially creates a dam to block water from entering your home, while allowing sufficient airflow. How do I Protect Against Spring Leaks? No New England homeowner wants a leaky roof. A leak barrier protection is one of the best roof materials to keep your home bone dry. According to Architect Magazine, 40 percent of structural problems stem from water intrusion, with roofing being one of the biggest culprits. This is why it’s so important to install a leak barrier system that blocks out water from rainstorms, snow, and more. Where is your roof most vulnerable in terms of leaking? You’ll find the majority of leaks occur in areas such as the eaves, chimneys, sidewalls, skylights, valleys, and more. It’s not realistic to endlessly add caulking to these areas to protect from leaks, and it’s not enough to only add protection around ice dam areas. Caulking only lasts a few years, and a lot of areas on your roof can spring a leak. Many companies will only add 3 feet of leak barrier protection, but Coastal Windows & Exteriors doubles that number for lasting protection. Keep in mind that ridge cap shingles can add even more protection against leaks. Double-Up With Roof Deck Protection While the leak barrier system keeps your home dry, roof deck protection adds a second layer. It’s useful for blocking out wind-driven rain, which can frequent coastal areas, especially during hurricane season. It also helps to reduce any trapped moisture that can enter your attic, which can even lead to frozen pipes and ice dams during the winter. How Can I Ensure that I’m Getting a Good Quality Roof? A good roof can last for a lifetime. Coastal Windows & Exteriors is a trusted, a family-run roofing company in New England that offers a 25-year labor warranty, along with a lifetime warranty on shingles. We also provide an unlimited wind speed warranty, guaranteeing your shingles will never blow away! - Can I Paint Vinyl Siding? Siding Questions to Ask Your Contractor this SpringJune 23, 2022Spring is here and this means that homeowners are contacting us for help in bringing wow-factor curb appeal to the exterior of their homes, especially in terms of vinyl siding. There are some questions that you’ll need to ask our vinyl siding sales team or your contractor to determine if vinyl is the best cladding option for your home. Below, you’ll find the most popular questions from New England homeowners about vinyl siding replacement. Can I Paint Vinyl Siding? The incredible thing about vinyl siding is that it doesn’t require any maintenance. This means that you never need to paint or stain your siding—and it’s important that you don’t do so ~ Keeping your vinyl siding its original color without ever applying paint or stain is important for these reasons: Your manufacturer will void the warranty if your siding is painted or stained. Choosing the wrong type of paint for vinyl siding, and even the wrong color, can cause the vinyl siding to warp. It will cause the vinyl siding to not last as long. A new coat of paint can cause your vinyl siding to bubble and peel. You can get unpredictable results. Since you are layering on paint on top of an existing color, you won’t know exactly how the paint or stain job will turn out. The safest bet is to leave your vinyl as-is and leave your paint supplies in the garage. Remember that vinyl siding comes in an amazing array of colors and aesthetic options, all of which give the advantage of incredible curb appeal without picking up a paintbrush. What Should I Look for When Choosing New Vinyl Siding? Not all vinyl siding is created equal. When you are looking for the best vinyl siding, you’ll want to consider both performance and aesthetic elements. This includes: Vinyl siding with foam backing for insulation. This is important for energy savings and allowing the siding to lie flat. Quality and premium paint colors that do not fade from the sun. Vinyl siding that looks like wood, giving it an authentic and expensive appearance without paying the price of wood siding. Vinyl siding that includes a warranty to back performance claims. Expert installation of vinyl siding. Even the best quality vinyl siding will fail to perform if it’s not correctly installed. In terms of vinyl siding brands, we highly recommend Exterior Portfolio vinyl siding. This is a leading manufacturer in vinyl siding products, offering siding that offers significantly more insulating power over fiber cement and wood. It brings a broad color palette and includes an industry-leading lifetime warranty, all while being engineered with recycled materials to make it eco-friendly. What Are The Different Types Of Vinyl Siding Styles? One of the most attractive elements of vinyl siding is the variety of its styles. When homeowners ask Can I paint vinyl siding, we point to all of the amazing color and style options that are available today. But what are the different types of vinyl siding styles? Traditionally, vinyl siding is engineered in panels that are installed horizontally on the home. However, vertical vinyl siding installation is also an option. While panels remain one of the most popular options for vinyl siding today, there are many other aesthetic features to consider. For example, not all vinyl siding panels are the same. Some panels are smooth, while the higher quality panels are textured and look like authentic wood. Speaking of wood, another popular option is vinyl cedar shake siding. These shakes appear hand splint and look just like the old wood shakes from the pioneer era here in New England. Other vinyl siding options include scallops, which are inspired by the Victorian era and they are perfect for highlighting window gables and eve edges. Do I Need to Worry About Moisture Damage, Mold and Algae Growth? It can be soggy in the spring, and it’s understandable that you’re worried about expensive moisture damage. This is especially true when it comes to rotted wood siding and the price of repairs. Did you know that rotted wood siding can cost over $20,000 in repairs? Another wonderful benefit of vinyl siding is that it will not damage from moisture. Since this is not an organic product, it is difficult for mold or mildew to grow. This keeps your exterior looking clean, no matter the type of weather we have here in New England. Vinyl siding is a moisture resistant and mold resistant exterior remodeling product, where you won’t have to worry about mildew or mold destroying the exterior and causing extensive damage. How Can I Further Protect my Home Against Moisture Damage? Springs can be soggy and summers are humid here in New England, and protection against moisture damage is a must. Vinyl siding is non-porous, which means moisture cannot penetrate the surface. You won’t have to deal with problems like mildew, mold, chipping and peeling wood, or rot. But don’t forget that protection against moisture damage goes beyond what the eye can see. When moisture seeps behind the panels, this can lead to costly moisture damage that leads to serious structural issues. One of the top ways to protect your home from moisture damage is with BLOCK-IT house wrap. This key layer of siding installation adds a protective layer to your home’s most vulnerable areas for moisture damage. While covering the exterior of your home beneath the siding panels, it’s also installed around windows and doors. The patented water channeling technology directs water away while providing a 20% greater water holdout than Tyvek. It’s also 40% stronger, bringing you top-of-the-line weatherization that every New England homeowner needs this spring. Click here to learn more about house wrap and its super sidekick, siding foam board. How Can I Keep the Charm of my New England Home with Vinyl Siding? Get the best of both worlds with vinyl siding that looks like wood! The appearance of vinyl siding in comparison to real wood depends on several factors. Traditionally, vinyl panels were smooth and did not resemble real wood planks and all. However, this is much different today. This home above has old cedar shingles that are damaged from exposure to the elements over many years. The homeowner can keep the same charm by incorporating vinyl cedar shakes like you see below: High-quality vinyl siding resembles real wood siding with lifelike wood grain patterns. They even feel like textured wood when you touch it with your hand. One of the most lifelike features of vinyl siding is when you choose and split shakes. The shakes, made from vinyl, appear similar to hand-cut cedar shakes that were split by hand back in the pioneer days. This gives a true resemblance of real wood siding without all of the costly disadvantages that come along with it. If you are concerned about how your new siding will look in comparison to wood, make sure you ask your contractor to see a sample. Have Questions About Vinyl Siding this Spring? Now that you know the answer to the question Can I Paint Vinyl Siding, we hope you have new insight into everything that vinyl siding has to offer. Vinyl siding is both energy efficient and moisture resistant, meaning that you never need to paint, stain, or sand again. Contact Coastal Windows & Exteriors for a free estimate on vinyl siding.
- Spring Remodeling Questions & Answers for New England Homeowners: Exterior Remodeling EditionJune 23, 2022If you’re seeking information on remodeling questions and answers for your exterior remodeling project, you’re at the right place. Working with countless homeowners just like you, we hear countless questions about warranties, energy savings, and more. These remodeling questions and answers cover common inquiries about roofing, replacement windows, and vinyl siding. Remodeling Questions & Answers: Roofing Below, we will review some of the most common roofing questions from New England homeowners. These questions cover warranty information, pricing, and some of the roof installation processes. If you don’t see your question answered here, be sure to contact us for help! Can My New Roof Handle High Winds? According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the roof is the most vulnerable component of the home when it comes to wind. If asphalt roofing is not installed correctly, high winds can easily peel the shingles right off of the roof. Given enough force, it can also destroy the additional layers of the roof. To ensure that your new roof can handle high winds, check that there is a wind warranty included with your investment. For example, a good wind warranty will guarantee that the roof can withstand Category 5 hurricane force winds, which measures up to 130 miles per hour. But the best wind warranty comes from GAF Roofing’s unlimited wind speed warranty. No matter how strong the winds are, your shingles are guaranteed to stay in place! Will You Remove My Old Roof? There are several ways to install a new roof. One is by installing the new roof over existing shingles, and the other way is to completely remove the old shingles and start from scratch. Installing new shingles over the original is one of the oldest tricks in the book to cut corners. It’s an especially bad idea if there are already two layers of existing shingles on your roof. Many building codes only allow two layers of shingles on the home. If roofing installers leave the old shingles in place, there is no way to determine if there are soft spots beneath them. Soft spots indicate a problem with the sheathing and the shingles must be removed to address the problem. The correct way to install a new roof is by removing the old shingles. The roofing company should also remove the flashing since this product is designed to fit with the original roof. What Impacts the Price of My Roof? Knowing the variables of what impacts the pricing of a roof can save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Variations range from roofing material to the architecture to your home. These include aspects such as: Roof size Pitch (steep roofs take a lot more time and materials to cover than a flat roof). Type of application (how it's installed on your roof deck). Materials used. Asphalt is one of the most affordable options while slate roofing is among the most expensive. The number of layers (the price can involve taking off old layers, which takes more time). Where you live (material prices and requirements by roofers vary by region). Code requirements for your roof. The size of your home. If you have a lot of skylights, chimneys, plumbing pipes or other adornments that need to be addressed during the installation. Remodeling Questions & Answers: Replacement Windows Do you have remodeling questions and answers for replacement windows? Here’s a great place to start. These are three key remodeling questions and answers that homeowners ask about window replacement. These questions cover energy-saving technologies, determining window quality, and learning how many windows to replace at once. What Makes Vinyl Windows Energy Efficient? Vinyl windows can help homeowners save tremendous amounts of energy. However, this depends on the components of those windows and the technologies used for efficiency. Energy efficient vinyl windows are made up of several components, including: Argon or krypton gases: These are odorless and colorless gases that are filled inside the window panes. Without them, the window panes are filled with air and no insulation. Low-e application: This is another invisible element that saves energy. It’s applied to the glass pane and reflects the sun’s rays in the summer, keeping your home cool. In the winter, it allows the sun to enter your home and naturally make it warmer. Insulated frames: Vinyl window frames have empty chambers unless they are filled with foam for an extra layer of insulation. Professional window installation: Windows should be professionally installed to ensure a custom fit to the frame. Keeping a 1/8th” gap helps reduce drafts and keep the window properly performing. Do I Need to Replace All Windows at Once? Sometimes homeowners will ask if they can just replace a couple of windows at a time. This might be due to time or budget restraints (we offer fantastic financing!). If you’re paying with cash and have a strict budget to adhere to, you are able to split your window replacement project into separate phases. However, keep in mind that this process might disqualify you from specific promotions at a later date, leaving you paying less for some of your windows and more for others. The good news is that you might be able to take advantage of a few great promotions during different times of the year! When you must split up your time between projects, it’s best to replace the windows in the areas where you spend the most time in your home, such as your living area or your kitchen. This will help keep these areas more comfortable. Another approach is to replace the windows in the upstairs area of your home first. This is especially the case if you are living with an older furnace, which can be a significant source of your high energy bills when combined with old windows. Old furnaces create a natural draft where energy is lost through the windows upstairs, due to heat rising in your home. When the windows are replaced in the upstairs area of your home, you’ll feel more comfortable as you sleep and wait for the rest of your windows to get replaced. This results in better quality sleep and even increased sound reduction. However, if you’re open to financing or you’re able to afford the cash option, replace all of your windows at one time. This allows you to experience the full impact of new window replacement throughout your entire home. How Do I Know That I’m Getting A High-Quality Window? Did you know that high-quality vinyl windows yield an average return on investment of 81%? This is even higher than the national average of 75%! Not all windows are created equal, but this is how you can ensure you’re getting the very best quality and value for your investment. We first like to warn homeowners of the infamous “Beauty Queen” window. This is a window that meets the minimum testing requirements for the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) and leaves it at that. There is a second level for AAMA, known as the AAMA Gold Label. This product is pulled by Fenestration Rating Council or AAMA, ensuring that it, in fact, matches the ratings that you’ll find in the product’s brochure. The idea behind Beauty Queen windows is that it looks good on paper, but it’s not necessarily the best quality. The reality is that not all of these products are manufactured in the exact same way and the industry isn’t heavily regulated. Every window company is responsible for showing homeowners that they are withholding industry standards, or even exceeding them as we do at Coastal Windows & Exteriors. The AAMA Gold Label ensures that you’re getting exactly what you pay for with your new window replacement. The best quality windows are engineered with 100% virgin vinyl to prevent warping, peeling, and flaking from moisture damage. They also include insulated glass packages with argon or krypton gas, which helps your home stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. You’ll also want to consider the window’s air infiltration rating, which is one of the keys to energy conservation. For example, our replacement windows have a CFM rating of .01 which is 23 times more airtight than the industry average. Best of all, you won't have to worry about all of the headaches and hassles that come along with wood windows, including constant maintenance and wood rot. Remodeling Questions & Answers: Vinyl Siding New vinyl siding installation is a big investment that brings an incredible facelift to your exterior. These are some of the most common remodeling questions and answers on vinyl siding, including choosing the best material and maintenance requirements. Why Should I Choose Vinyl Over Other Siding Materials? It’s no secret that vinyl siding is the superior cladding option for New England homes. But what makes this material the best over other siding options? Vinyl vs. Wood According to Angie’s List, vinyl siding is one of the most cost-effective exterior options on the market—especially in comparison to wood. Homeowners can save between $2-to-$3 per square foot on vinyl siding vs wood counterpart. Vinyl can also trump wood in terms of quality. Unless wood siding is treated, it is susceptible to a myriad of issues including peeling and rotting. Leaving wood siding untreated and exposed to the elements will result in damage in nearly any climate. It will need to be treated regularly to keep it in top condition. Vinyl vs. Aluminum Aluminum is another contender for your home’s exterior. However, it’s slightly more expensive than vinyl at roughly $4 per square foot. This exterior can help reflect heat and reduce heating and cooling costs, but vinyl siding can reduce energy as well with solutions such as insulated underlayment and blocking heat transfer through wood studs. Exposure to the elements can turn aluminum siding chalky and porous, which allows mildew to penetrate the surface. For aluminum siding that is especially grimy, homeowners may need to use a biodegradable detergent or trisodium phosphate for cleaning. Vinyl vs. Brick Brick is a durable and beautiful exterior option, but it has limited variations. For example, brick is typically not well-suited for architecture such as Queen Anne or Craftsman. Homes that have old wooden exterior look best when replaced with a product that’s a close match to the original, such as vinyl. In terms of maintenance, brick requires re-pointing of mortar and pressure washing for cleaning. Brick exterior is also considerably expensive compared to vinyl. According to Vinyl Siding Institute, brick can cost 420 percent more than vinyl siding. What Are the Guidelines for Quality Vinyl Siding? Vinyl siding standards are covered by the American Society of Testing and Materials. To get the best value, select vinyl siding with widths of at least .46” inches. The ASTM only recommends .035, which is builder grade material. Vinyl exterior can look the same to the naked eye. However, titanium dioxide is an important ingredient to prevent color fading. If the vinyl does not contain sufficient amounts of titanium dioxide, it can quickly fade from the sun’s rays. Quality vinyl siding is typically textured and can feature lifelike wood grain patterns over the length of the panel. Carefully inspect the warranty before choosing a vinyl siding option. The warranty will provide clues on how weather-resistant the product is, which is key to long-lasting and durable siding. Installation is a key component to vinyl siding performance. Choose siding companies that offer installation to block out moisture and lock the panels securely in place. How Do I Maintain My Vinyl Siding? Vinyl home siding is simple to maintain. Since this exterior is engineered with heavy gauge plastic, the quality panels won’t chip or peel. This eliminates the need to paint, stain, or sand the siding after several years. Color fading is a concern with vinyl siding, but not when you choose a premium option with a color warranty. For example, the vinyl siding from Coastal Windows & Exteriors comes equipped with ChromaTrue ASA. It creates a strong exterior layer of protection against fading from the sun and wear from harsh elements like our New England weather. Over time, atmospheric dirt may stick to the siding. Cleaning is easy with vinyl exterior, and there are several ways to approach cleaning this exterior: Handwashing with a soft cloth and mild cleaning solution. Homeowners can make cleaning solutions by mixing mild dish soap with warm water. Another option is to create a 70/30 mixture of water and vinegar. This vinegar solution can also successfully remove mold and mildew. If the vinyl has a textured surface, use only a bristle brush to remove stains from the grooves. Avoid using cleaners that contain nail polish remover, furniture polish, or undiluted chlorine bleach. For best results, clean vinyl siding by following the directions from the manufacturer. - What is Sustainable Roofing?June 23, 2022When upgrading to a new roof, many homeowners wonder about the most environmentally friendly roofing material in New England. Sustainability is an important consideration. After all, you don’t want old roofing waste to take up space in the landfill for decades to come. But what is the most environmentally friendly roofing material in New England? In this blog, we’ll show you what it means to have a sustainable roof including shingle materials, ventilation, and more. What Makes Roofing Materials Sustainable? The good news is that there are eco-friendly roofing materials to consider. The most environmentally friendly roofing material is undoubtedly asphalt shingles. There are several reasons why asphalt shingles are an eco-friendly roofing product, such as: Asphalt shingles are incredibly durable against the elements, which means you won’t need to worry about a replacement more than once in your life when you select quality shingles. When coupled with the GAF Golden Pledge Lifetime warranty, the lifetime of your roof is about 5 times longer than the typical roofing warranty in New England. Estimated to protect your home for up to 50 years, the warranty applies to labor as well as materials and shingles, which are covered for a lifetime. Backed by a strong warranty, asphalt shingles become the most environmentally friendly roofing material in New England. After all, they last for nearly an entire lifetime. This is the best way to ensure that old roofing waste is kept out of the landfill! You can learn more about our product warranties by viewing the video below: Other Reasons Why New England Homeowners Love Asphalt Roofing We are big asphalt advocates here at Coastal Windows & Exteriors. Asphalt is one of the best roofing materials for several reasons. Asphalt shingles are a cost-effective option for roofing. If you need an upgrade without breaking the bank, asphalt is a no-brainer option. You can easily find Energy Star-certified asphalt roofing to help lower your utility bills, especially shingles that are lighter in color. Asphalt roofing, when installed correctly, can take a beating from the elements. The asphalt shingles from Coastal Windows & Exteriors can withstand high winds of 130 mph, which begins with the installation of starter strip shingles—the first layer of shingles to go on your roof. This type of roof is fast and easy to install, giving you a new durable roof sooner rather than later. Another advantage of choosing asphalt is the large variety of color options. While vinyl siding is one of the best ways to transform the exterior of your home, a new roof can truly help do the same. According to Better Homes & Gardens, a dark-colored roof will minimize your home’s mass while downplaying the highest peaks of your roof. Light-colored roofing will make your home look bigger with a taller roof. Improve Your Carbon Footprint with Energy Efficient Roofing What makes for an energy-efficient roof? One of the major factors of a worry-free roof installation process is considering ventilation. A properly ventilated roof and attic is key for performance and energy savings. You will want to ask your roofing contractor if you will need new ventilation and where that will be installed. Typical ventilation for roofing is installed on the soffit and on the top of the roof along the gable. With ventilation in place, it reduces worry about potential problems such as condensation on rafter beams that can turn into mold, mildew, and even wood rot. Other Components of an Eco-Friendly Roof There are several important roof components that you’ll need to know about, and you can find an inclusive list of those by clicking here. The best roofing systems are capable of increasing indoor temperatures and even lowering energy bills. An energy efficient roof includes several working components such as: Adequate ventilation. Homes without proper roof and attic ventilation can result in very high energy bills, especially during the winter and summer. When there is no airflow in the attic, the heat can ultimately damage the roof shingles above. Meanwhile, the air conditioning system is working harder to compensate for the hot attic while your main living area remains cool. When it comes to roof attic ventilation, there are three types of vents: soffit vents, gable vents, and ridge vents. Roof deck protection provides a barrier to both water and air infiltration. It protects the home while reducing moisture that can make the attic space humid during the summer months, which can make an impact on your heating and cooling bills. Synthetic roof deck protection provides a second layer of protection to defend against roof rot. The color of the shingles. Shingle color can impact the temperature of an attic space, even if the roof is otherwise considered energy efficient. Cool roofing reflects the sun’s rays and can make the roof temperature 50°F cooler when the surface reaches 150F°. The last consideration to keep in mind is how your roofing contractor handles roofing waste when it comes to replacement. Properly recycling asphalt roofing is important to us here at Coastal Windows & Exteriors, which is why we are a certified GAF Certified Green Roofer. What is a GAF Certified Green Roofer? The requirements for becoming a GAF Certified Green Roofer are as follows: The completion of a sustainability assessment Completing the “Asphalt Shingles and the Green Home” course through GAF CZZ Joining the local USGBC chapter The roofing contractor must complete a quarterly recycling activity report You can read all about our GAF Green Roofer certification by clicking here. - My Windows Are Leaking Water: Spring Troubleshooting for WindowsMay 26, 2022As winter fades away, telltale signs of moisture damage from snowy weather become prominent on old wood windows. One of the first steps to take is inspecting old windows for moisture damage, especially if your New England home has wood window frames. If the window becomes damaged, you might find yourself saying, “My windows are leaking water!” In this blog, we will show you the signs that your windows are leaking water, along with the proper steps to stop window leaks. Watch for Water Damage on Windows Your windows have a big job—they reduce your energy bills while keeping your home dry. But harsh weather conditions such as snow, ice, and rain can wear down your windows over time, both in terms of aesthetics and performance. If you're looking for water damage on your home’s windows, it will be more prevalent on wood windows. It is very easy for wood window frames to succumb to moisture damage, as well as mold, and mildew growth, especially if they are not properly maintained. Signs of damage can include peeling paint and rot in wood windows and frames. Water damage is unlikely to occur with vinyl replacement windows. These windows also have weep holes that prevent water damage. Window weep holes drain water from your windows while preventing airflow into your home, and small flaps cover the holes to keep the wind from blowing through them. Additionally, the exterior holes are not aligned with the interior holes, which prevents direct airflow. Why Do Windows Leak Water? If your windows are leaking water, you might wonder why this problem is happening in the first place. Windows leak water for several reasons and they depend on where the leak is coming from. The Water is Coming from Around the Window Depending on where the leak is located, the water can seep in from the top, sides, or bottom of the window. This happens when the sealant or caulk around the window becomes old and cracked, allowing rain to enter the house. Replacing the old caulking with new caulk is a simple fix. However, if the windows are old and underperforming, caulk is a band-aid resolution, and it’s only a matter of time until the caulk fails again. The Water is Leaking from the Top Top-of-the-window leaks can indicate installation mistakes. It could be that the flashing was improperly installed, or it may not exist at all. A poorly installed house wrap could also lead to leaking windows. Unfortunately, you can't exactly fix this type of window leak by applying caulk. The house wrap and flashing tape around and above the window may be removed. In addition to keeping water flowing away from the siding, house wrap also acts as a moisture barrier. The Window Leaks from the Bottom When customers call us asking for help with leaky windows, the leak could also be coming from the bottom of the window. Windows with metal or vinyl frames usually have drain holes near their bottom edges. These holes allow water to escape, but can become clogged with debris. Using a wire coat hanger, you can clean out the holes. Water leaks between the sill pan and the window sill are more likely to occur near the bottom where the sill slopes. The sill of every window should slope away from the window so that water can drain to the exterior of the house. The window may need to be reinstalled if either of these is incorrect or missing. How to Detect Moisture Damage in Windows If you suspect that your windows are leaking water, you might be unsure about what to look for in terms of moisture damage. Moisture damage can be obvious, but other times the signs are inconspicuous and go unnoticed. These are the most common signs of moisture damage in windows: Check for discoloration around the windows and on the frames. You might find water spots and stains in the home that are brown, yellow, or copper in color. Cracks, bubbles, and peeling paint are all symptoms of potential window leaks. Changes in the texture of wood may also indicate window leaks. As an example, wood window frames may buck when they become detached from the siding. As well as sagging window frames, wood window frames may feel spongy from moisture damage. Mold and mildew can grow both inside and outside of walls under the right conditions. With severe moisture damage, you can poke a wood window frame with a screwdriver and it will sink right through the frame. The window has foggy glass that won't wipe away. You feel a draft around your windows. You're experiencing high energy bills. What to do if Your Windows are Leaking Water If you suspect your home’s windows are leaking water, you’ll need to call in a window company to assess the situation. Leaky windows often call for a replacement, and you’ll want to choose moisture-proof vinyl replacement windows that are not prone to mold growth and other types of moisture damage. The chemical makeup of your home’s new vinyl siding makes it resistant to heat and fading from the sun. - Battling Mold and Leaks: The Benefits of Roof Replacement in the SpringApril 11, 2022During the spring season, it’s not uncommon to see roofing crews hard at work on homes throughout New England. This is for good reason, as roof replacement in the spring comes with a myriad of benefits. Providing a return on investment of 64.4%, roof replacement in the spring is a smart project for the following reasons. Put an End to Roof Leaks & Costly Water Damage Bills Drip, drip, drip. This is a common sound to hear during spring storms if you have a leaky roof. Roof replacement is the most effective way to put an end to roof leaks. Unfortunately, the signs of a roof leak aren’t always so obvious. If you are collecting rain in a bucket from the middle of your living room, you’ll need roof replacement to prevent extensive damage if it hasn’t already occurred. What are the less obvious signs that your roof is leaking? Consider the following: Yellow or brown stains on the ceiling. They can come in various sizes and shades of each hue. Sometimes they can appear like big coffee stains. Condensation on your interior walls. You might find this in areas around your windows. Wet attic insulation. If you’re in your attic and discover damp or wet spots on the insulation, it means that water is leaking through an area of the roof. Condensation on rafter beams. Condensation buildup can appear when water drips from the attic ceiling, settling on the rafter beams. If this problem goes undetected, it can result in wood damage and even rot. Keep in mind that fixing a roof leak and repairing the damage can be quite pricey. It can cost $2500 to fix a ceiling leak and repair drywall. This doesn’t include any other material damage from the water that can occur, such as damaging electronics and personal belongings. For peace of mind and the protection of your home, roof replacement with GAF systems with Tiger Paw keeps your home dry and free from leaks. Banish Mold And Mildew Growth Did you know that a damp and leaky attic can lead to mold and mildew growth? Both mold and mildew will thrive and damp in dark areas. When combined with an organic food source such as wood rafter beams in the attic, you have the perfect recipe for mold. Mold in the attic comes in a variety of colors. White and green are quite common, and black mold is the most dangerous. If you have black mold in the attic, there is a serious moisture and airflow issue. Your insulation can also be contaminated as well. Why do mold and mildew grow in the attic? This is because humidity levels can rise in the attic. When the roof is ventilated, fresh air can help keep mold and mildew at bay. Not only is the presence of mold a hassle, but removal is also expensive. Mold removal in the attic can also cost you nearly $5,000. Not only will you need to address the mold issue, but there is still the process of ventilating and possibly re-insulating the attic. By opting for a roof with ventilation, you can avoid mold and mildew growth altogether. You’ll need a combination of ventilation systems to get the best results, including intake and outtake vents. These vents will pull fresh air inside and push it back out to keep the airflow moving. Achieve an All-Season Upgrade While Preventing Winter Ice Dams We might not be thinking about ice dams when flowers are in bloom, but the reality is that it won’t remain spring forever. A poorly performing roof is a major culprit to ice dam formation. It’s caused by heat loss through the roof, which melts the snow and forms ice dams at the gutters. Image source: University of Minnesota The heat moves through the ceiling and roof by way of conduction, which rises to the top of the ceiling. As the warm air comes in contact with a roof during temperatures at or below 32 degrees, melting the snow. How do you prevent winter ice dams for the next winter season? Yet again, ventilation is an important component for ice dam prevention. It will help achieve a uniform temperature in the attic that is close to the outdoor temperature. This way, the attic won’t overheat and result in ice dams. Read more on how a GAF roof can prevent with ice dam leaks. - National Window Safety Week: What To Do To Keep Your Family SafeApril 6, 2022It's National Window Safety Week! This week is all about helping families learn how to prevent falls from windows as well as using windows to escape during an emergency. Windows can serve as a lifeline to your family in the event of a house fire. However, it’s easy to overlook the potential danger of windows in our homes. After all, they provide such great natural light, fresh breezes, and even help us save energy! But parents must be extremely aware of unattended open windows, especially for children. It’s a scary statistic, but roughly 5,000 kids fall from windows each year. That’s why it’s important to increase window safety in your home. What is National Window Safety Week? Established in 1997, Window Safety Week is a campaign that aims to increase awareness about the potential dangers to open windows. It also focuses on home safety and security, including the use of window safety devices to prevent injury and protect homes from burglars and intruders. The concept of this week comes from NSC and the Window Safety Taskforce. During Window Safety Week, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) encourages parents to take the following five steps to increase window safety in their homes: Install locks on all window openings. Make sure screens are in good working order. Consider FlexScreens that provide safety for children and also give you great visibility as well as protect your home from insects. Use curtains or shades to keep children from opening windows Consider using a baby gate to prevent access to high places Let’s discuss each of these points in detail to help you better protect your family. Install Locks on All Window Openings No matter if you live in an apartment or a house, all of the windows in your home should be equipped with locks. This includes the basement windows, hallways, and any other windows that your children could access. If your window locks aren’t working, you’ll need to consider replacement as soon as possible. Finding replacement windows with quality locks is key to window safety. Common Types of Lock Options for Replacement Windows Did you know that each style of window has its own lock that works best? When you install new replacement windows, the locks are an often-overlooked aspect of this upgrade. Generally, heavy-duty cam sweep locks hold sashes in place during violent weather and also provide intruder-resistant protection. Meanwhile, some of the most common window locks include: Sash locks: These locks are common on double-hung windows. Crafted from two pieces and made from metal, you’ll turn a crescent-shaped piece to lock the window in place. These are a safe option and provide great security to windows. Window latches: If you want a visually pleasing and secure window, you’ll want to consider window latches. Vinyl windows will typically use latches that closely resemble window sashes. Window stays: Window stays are items that support open windows and also maintain the security of closed windows. Available in a variety of finishes, these window stays provide a neat finish and offer the security you need for your home. Vent limit latches: This proprietary Q4 locking system provides a wood-like look without the unsightly tilt latches. One major benefit of upgrading your windows is improved home security. The locks and latches are sturdier and more durable, ensuring that the windows. By using sash locks, latches, and stays, you can enjoy a secure window with complete peace of mind. What are the Best Childproof Window Locks? While all window locks can provide protection, vent limit latches are perhaps the very best for families with children. You can minimize the risk of children falling out of windows. However, the risk becomes much greater if the opening control device is not installed correctly. This means that you absolutely must have windows with vent limit latches installed for childproof locking. Keep in mind that you can’t go to the hardware store and buy vent limit latches. These are factory-installed on your windows, engineered with a 4” clearance. This means that it will not allow items (or children!) to pass through any space in the window opening after the window fall prevention device is in place. Beware of the Dangers of Lead Paint If you live in an old home, you might have peeling and chipping paint around your windows. This type of issue is different than moisture damage, as it signals that you have lead paint in your home. If you’re not sure whether the paint in your home is lead-safe or not, you can test it to find out. You can also hire a lead-testing lab to perform the tests for you. However, you should remember that even if the walls don’t have lead in them, the dust from the walls can still pose a danger. So when in doubt, you should assume that the walls are contaminated and keep your child away from it. Symptoms of Lead Poisoning Lead poisoning is a very serious concern. The symptoms in children are as follows: Developmental delay Learning difficulties Irritability Loss of appetite Weight loss Sluggishness and fatigue Abdominal pain Vomiting Constipation Hearing loss Seizures Eating things, such as paint chips, that aren't food (pica) Keep in mind that the issue isn't only about ingesting the paint. Even the dust from lead paint can result in serious health consequences. The best way to get rid of lead paint on your windows is to hire a Leaf Safe Certified window contractor. In the state of Massachusetts, homes that are built before 1978 may contain lead paint. As a Lead Safe Certified Contractor, Coastal Windows & Exteriors knows how to safely replace windows with lead paint. Make Sure Screens Are in Good Working Order A broken or malfunctioning window is a gateway for intruders and insects. Make sure all of your windows have been treated for bugs. You can also use an air purifier to rid your home of allergens and particles in the air. Meanwhile, FlexScreen is extremely damage-resistant, protecting it from dents and breaks no matter what gets thrown at it. It’s engineered with a powder-coated steel frame on the screens are tough and scratch-resistant. The impact-resistant engineering also allows it to serve as a safety feature for windows, all while providing you with impeccable visibility and defense against insects. With the flexible material of Flex screen, the design allows for quick installation without any complicated removal methods required. Use Curtains Shades to Keep Children From Opening Windows Curtains and shades can prevent children from seeing outside and falling or climbing out of windows. This is especially important during the warmer months when windows are typically left open. Shades and curtains can be used to satisfy the sun-protection aspect of window safety in addition to keeping kids out of sight. Beware of using blinds around young children. Roughly 10 children under 5 die each year from strangulation by way of blind or drapery cords. Choose cordless window blinds in place of traditional ones to eliminate the risk of strangulation. Consider Using a Baby Gate to Prevent Access to Windows A baby gate is a great way to prevent access to areas with windows. It is essentially a gate that clips onto the wall next to a staircase or a landing. The gate is used to restrict access to an area and is a great way to prevent kids from climbing or accessing areas with windows. Plus, installing a baby gate does not require a lot of extra effort or time for parents. Using Windows as a Fire Escape The other aspect of window safety week is using windows as a fire escape. Windows are often the only way you can get out of your house if there is a fire. You typically have about 3 minutes to escape, and windows are often more accessible than doors. In some homes, it may not be possible to use stairways because they have already been consumed by flames or smoke, and hallways may also offer limited exits for those on upper floors. The following characteristics help determine if the window is adequate to use as a fire escape path: Easy to open: Escape windows should not require you to break glass as you make an exit. The window should be quick to open and not contain any broken parts, or pose injury threats such as exposed clips, nails, and screws. Window height: The window needs to be large enough for an adult to fid on the outside of a window. Some of the best windows to use as escape routes during a fire include swing-in awning windows, casement windows, slider windows, and double-hung windows. You should avoid using hopper windows or awning windows that swing open at the top of the frame. As always, test your smoke alarms and replace the batteries at least once a year. - Maintaining Vinyl Siding: A Spring ChecklistApril 4, 2022Curb Appeal 101: Perfecting Your Siding There’s nearly no other season that homeowners play such a large emphasis on curb appeal than springtime. It’s not a surprise that your exterior siding comes in relation to curb appeal, and vinyl siding happens to be one of the most popular options in New England. It also offers a whopping 81.7% ROI! When it comes to vinyl siding maintenance, you’ll be happy to hear that there is not a lot involved. Here are some tips to make sure your siding is in good shape for Spring. Next time you search for Siding Replacement or Contractor Near Me, read this checklist first! Check for Signs of Moisture Damage This is one of the more ominous issues when it comes to your home exterior. Moisture damage will directly impact the siding performance. However, vinyl siding is a non-porous material. This means that water will not penetrate the exterior and cause problems like rot. With wood siding, it’s a different story. You may see holes in your siding too. You will need to look for signs such as: Chunks of the exterior have crumbled away. The wood is soft and the screwdriver sinks into it the last time when you push it into the wood. There is mold, mildew or algae growth present. The siding is dry rotting. There are bubbles in your siding. The siding seams are popped out of place. Since wood is an organic material, this makes it is a good source of food for insects. The bad news is that it can ultimately end up destroying wood siding. This is why many homeowners choose to switch from all wood siding to new vinyl. The better news is that there are plenty of options for vinyl siding that looks like wood, all without the worry of moisture damage and wood rot. Look Out for Termite and Insect Damage When it comes to replacing siding on a house in the spring, you’re doing yourself a favor by deterring insects. Our vinyl siding is treated to repel insects, even termites! According to Progressive Foam, “Termites destroy wood in foundations, walls, and roofs of houses, and the damage they leave behind can be an expensive and difficult task. Most people aren’t aware of the damage caused by termites until it is too late to eliminate them.” We incorporate a termite inhibitor in our insulating foam for several reasons: Termites will tunnel through ordinary foam insulation for shelter. Insects are undetected behind your siding so they can have easy access to the wooden parts of the home structure. The tunnels that termites leave behind damage the insulating value of the foam and compromise its strength of the foam. All it takes for a termite infestation to begin is an entry point of 1/32”. If your old wood siding is filled with holes or loose panels, it’s inviting these pests to further destroy the exterior. Meanwhile, termites need a warm and moist environment to thrive. Wet wood siding serves as a haven. However, if moisture is found behind the panels of old vinyl siding, an infestation can still begin. Remember that termites tend to gravitate to untreated wood siding. Don’t forget that termites aren’t the only pests to worry about with wood siding! Carpenter ants are more than happy to make a home out of your wood siding as well. The signs of termite and insect damage on wood siding include the following: Buckling wood Termite swarms Termite tunnels A strange smell in your home that is similar to mold or mildew Holes in the wood Swollen walls, floors, or ceiling Your wood siding looks like it has a hint of moisture damage You may find peeling paint or loose wallpaper in your home Tip: Foamback siding does more than just save energy; it protects your home from insect damage. Do Not Pressure Wash Your Vinyl Siding: Try This Instead Many homeowners ask how to clean vinyl siding. What is the correct way to wash vinyl siding in the spring? There is one warning that we need to make clear: it’s a bad idea when it comes to pressure washing a house with vinyl siding! Avoid using cleaners that contain nail polish remover, furniture polish or undiluted chlorine bleach. For best results, clean vinyl siding by following the directions from the manufacturer. Check the Siding for Cracks and Breaks Cracks or breaks in the siding can cause water leaks in your home, especially during the rainy spring season, or if you wash the exterior with a garden hose. Why does this happen? Old siding ages become moisture-damaged Then produces breaks or cracks Very heavy wind storms and downpours can also produce cracks Be careful with your lawnmower or rock buildups against your siding. Tip: Don’t forget to look at your interior walls for damage. If your vinyl siding is cracked or broken, it can’t protect the exterior walls. This may result in interior wall damage, such as cracks. Ensure Straight Panel Installation Check to make sure that your vinyl siding is properly installed. This means that the panels are positioned straight on your exterior. If the siding panels are not properly installed, they won’t effectively protect your exterior from the elements. Watch For These Issues: Loose panels that flap in the wind, or they are hanging off the exterior of your home Sagging panels Missing panels that are missing, which exposes your home to the elements and may easily result in costly moisture damage Warped or wavy siding There is a gap between where the seam of your roof and the siding meets If any of the above is discovered, you will need to have your siding either repaired or replaced. Allowing your exterior to be exposed to the elements will result in narrative problems. Replacing Your House Siding this Spring Ready to transform your curb appeal this spring? - Worry-Free Winter Vinyl Siding Installation: Can You Install Vinyl Siding in the Winter?February 25, 2022Did you know we install all winter long? Winter, Schminter! Many New England homeowners are in need of new efficient windows, siding, roofing, and entry doors due to old products, drafts, leaks, and high energy bills. With the increase of National Grid spike of over 108% since last fall, it’s no wonder why you are in need and need to act now. We want to let you know that winter is a great time to replace inefficient exterior products that cause energy bills to skyrocket! Winter doesn’t mean you need to put off your home improvement projects until spring. We are trained to work in ALL weather and understand your concerns/ hence we enhanced our Winter Worry-Free Installation Program No more worries about feeling stuck with those drafty windows, an old leaky roof, cracked inefficient siding, and high energy bills waiting until Spring. Winter-Schminter-you got nothing on Coastal! With our Winter Worry-Free Installation Program, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that our siding contractors work quickly without losing quality or craftsmanship. Meanwhile, we prep your home for minimal heat loss during the installation process. How Do You Install Vinyl Siding in the Winter? In a perfect world, we’d install vinyl siding in spring-like temperatures. But here in New England, we all know that the weather is less than perfect. So, how do you install vinyl siding in the winter? The first step is to understand how the temperature affects building materials, specifically vinyl siding. How Vinyl Siding Changes in Cold Temperatures Temperature changes cause all building materials to expand and contract. In a building material, as the temperature rises, the material will expand in length, conversely, as the temperature drops, the material will contract in length. All building materials have this property, but vinyl tends to have a higher rate of expansion than materials like wood. An average vinyl siding piece measuring 12′ long can expand up to ½” during the course of a year. Vinyl Siding Shrinks in Cold Weather: Cut Accordingly While ½” might not seem like much, the truth is that it makes a big difference when it comes to vinyl siding installation in the winter. Vinyl siding expands and contracts in reaction to temperature, so vinyl siding installers will need to cut the panels as necessary to work with growth and shrinkage. Can you install vinyl siding in the winter? Yes, and we’ll give an example. If it’s 30 degrees outside, vinyl siding installers need to consider that the vinyl will expand when it warms up to 80 or 90 degrees. This means they will need to accommodate the siding to expand by up to ½” inch in the heat. This is when we’ll cut the siding at lengths to allow the vinyl siding to expand during the summer months. It’s critical to pay attention to window and door casings as well. When vinyl siding gets too close to the window and door casing, it expands until it hits the casing and then it begins to buckle. In this example, an extra 1/4″ space for expansion is wise. The Art of Nailing in the Winter Cutting the vinyl siding to proper lengths is both an art and a science, but it turns out that nailing is important in the winter as well. Experienced vinyl siding installers know that the nail should never be tight against the nailing fin. This is because the head of the nail needs about 1/16” space between the nailing fin. Furthermore, the nailing technique must allow for the vinyl siding panels to move freely. When the vinyl siding cannot grow during the summer, it results in buckling---which is bad news. Coastal Windows & Exteriors is highly skilled and experienced at vinyl siding installation in the winter, providing you with a worry-free experience from start to finish. Why Should You Install Vinyl Siding in the Winter? If you are considering installing vinyl siding in the winter, we encourage you to take on this project! There are plenty of benefits of installing vinyl siding in the winter, such as: Get ahead of the spring rush, especially if you are concerned about a materials shortage. Improve the appearance of your home and prepare it for spring curb appeal Remove the risk of moisture damage or wood rot from old wood siding Add superior protection to the elements, ranging from snow to freezing rain and high winds Increase your property value if you plan to sell your home this spring Potentially lower energy bills by reducing heat transfer Maintain a comfortable home with insulated siding During the winter season, you’re likely concerned about energy efficiency. Everyone knows that replacement windows are incredible upgrades for energy conservation, but what about vinyl siding? As one of the best reasons to install vinyl siding in the winter, insulated house siding can make a big difference in interior comfort levels as well as energy conservation. Let’s talk about insulated house siding and why you should upgrade with this product in the wintertime. What is Insulated House Siding? Insulated siding is designed with a solid-ridge foam as a backing. This foam stands as an additional barrier against heat transfer. Engineered as foam back siding, it makes it much more difficult for energy to escape through the wood studs. Insulated siding is vital for home performance. The truth is that other material options of cladding won't insulate your home as efficiently, which includes uninsulated vinyl. While wood is a natural insulator, the problem arises when it is not properly maintained. Without regular maintenance, wood cannot provide the insulation benefits that you would expect. The Surprising Trouble With Studs (Wood & Metal) Keep in mind that most types of exterior walls have insulation between the wall studs. The problem is that significant energy is lost through the wood studs themselves. You might wonder how studs could possibly allow so much energy loss in a home. One important point that most homeowners don’t know is that wood studs take over about 25% of a wall’s surface. You don't see them because they are inside the exterior framework, namely the drywall which is up against the exterior wall. Think of this as 25% of your wall working against your attempts at keeping your home comfortable. Whether you are trying to keep your home warm or cool, what metal studs are both poor insulators. Once the wood studs come in contact with the exterior cladding, it is easy for energy to pass through them. This is known as thermal bridging. What is Thermal Bridging? Thermal bridging is the process of energy moving through or across an object that is more conductive than the materials that surround it. The conductive material---metal and wood---allow the heat to pass right through. From there, your energy bills can increase significantly. It’s very similar to having an entire wall of your home uninsulated. How Insulated House Siding Can Help Your Home All Year Long It’s true that thermal bridging is responsible for a considerable amount of energy loss in the winter. The good news is that you don’t have to settle with a poor-performing home. Insulated vinyl siding can stop heat transfer in its track, as it insulates right down to the wood studs. In fact, insulated vinyl siding offers up to an 80% return on investment with roughly $70 saved annually. Not only can thermal siding prevent energy loss, but it’s exceptional at withstanding the elements. That’s because quality vinyl siding is engineered with PVC, which is incredibly weatherproof. It can withstand all the weather we have here in New England without becoming damaged from moisture. In addition to insulation and weather resistance, insulated vinyl siding is sustainable to the environment. If you are asking “is vinyl siding recyclable?” The answer is yes! It can be recycled and made into other items made from plastic, keeping the old siding out of the landfills. As it is primarily made of salt, the manufacturing process efficiently has zero or no waste as scraps go back into the product stream. Can You Install Vinyl Siding in the Winter? With this investment or your home, you might be wondering about the best-insulated vinyl siding. Coastal Windows & Exteriors provides top-of-the-line foam-backed siding for New England residents. We install vinyl siding with unparalleled performance standards and incredible craftsmanship. Yes, even in the winter! Coming in an array of styles, our insulated vinyl siding looks like real wood. - Winter Installation: What You Should Know When Working With a Contractor In The WinterFebruary 24, 2022Did You Know We Install All Winter Long? Winter, Schminter! We have our Winter Worry-Free Installation Program for full peace of mind. Many New England homeowners are in need of new efficient windows, siding, roofing, and entry doors due to old products, drafts, leaks, and high energy bills. With the increase of National Grid spike of over 108% since last fall, it’s no wonder why you are in need and need to act now. Winter doesn’t mean you need to put off your home improvement projects until spring. We are trained to work in ALL weather and understand your concerns/ hence we enhanced our Winter Worry-Free Installation Program. No more worries about feeling stuck with those drafty windows, an old leaky roof, cracked inefficient siding, and high energy bills waiting until Spring. Winter-Schminter-you got nothing on Coastal! With our Winter Worry-Free Installation Program, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that our installers work quickly without losing quality or craftsmanship. Meanwhile, we prep your home for minimal heat loss during the installation process. Why Should You Consider Wintertime Exterior Remodeling? With over 40 years of winter installation experience, rest assured that you’re making the right choice to upgrade now instead of waiting until spring. These are our general rules for winter installation, giving you complete peace of mind: First, our expert factory-trained installation team stages each project at our warehouse the day before to assess the upcoming installation date, weather, temperature, and other variables that will come into play during your installation.
On your installation day, the lead installer will discuss your concerns and lay out the day’s plan, depending on your project. Our goal is to complete the installation with as little disruption and exposure to the outdoor elements as possible. The team then stages the immediate area, and as needed, closes off other areas of the home, laying down thick drop cloths and covering or protecting any fragile areas of the home near the installation. We also work on approved manufacturer regulations in protecting your building materials for your home; such as believing roofing shingles day of installation as opposed to the day before to prevent cracking and breaking. Our contractors will discuss the storage of building materials and dumpsters with homeowners before a project starts. This can be particularly important as tools and materials should be safely stowed out of the reach of children. Some installers think it is fine to just throw a tarp over lumber and product materials- where this is fine in the late spring and summer, it is not good practice for winter months as it is not a good measure to keep everything warm and dry. It is also a concern for our installers to keep their tools warm as they can slip in ice and frozen materials can get stuck together. The team then stages the immediate area, and as needed, closes off other areas of the home, laying down thick drop cloths and covering or protecting any fragile areas of the home near the installation. Some homeowners are concerned about dust and air quality during an installation since most likely all windows are closed during the winter so we make sure we do our best to have the cleanest job site and contain it by using plastic wall barriers in common areas if applicable. Start saving money and be comfortable in your home now! Read on to learn what precautions our contractors do while working on your home this winter. How Does Winter Installation Work? Here are some of the best practice rules we follow for winter installs. Winter Window Installation We know people can be concerned with replacing their windows in the winter but it can actually be a great time to replace those old drafty inefficient windows as nothing will keep you more comfortable in your home during the winter and years to come as new windows. You can be confident with our Winter Worry-Free Installation Program, as we will replace your windows efficiently while following all the required regulations. This ensures your home’s exposure to the outside elements are at an extreme minimum to prevent heat loss. Window installation in the winter can help prevent energy loss while keeping energy bills under control. Are you wondering how we install windows in the winter? Our contractors closely follow the 10-step checklist below: Close off each room they're working on and install one window at a time to avoid excess heat loss. When we are doing a large window in a common area we prep the room/s with walls with plastic barriers. When we install an entry door we plastic barrier to prevent heat loss while working on the door frame. We also plan ahead and bend any capping so there is not an extended time with the area exposed to the outside elements. Windows and doors are drop shipped that same day so they can stay at room temperature as well as the matching sealants for them. We will take out your old window and place it in your new window in less than 5 minutes on average. Typically we have (depending on height/floor of home) one installer working on the outside and one working on the inside of your home not only for timing but also to make sure that we’re not tracking additional snow etc. into your home. We use a drop cloth outside the home to collect any debris that may hide in the snow and also to keep the jobsite free of dirt or snow. For storm doors, since they are aluminum, installers should drill small pilot holes to allow the screws to penetrate without splitting. Care should be taken when caulking anything to guarantee that the temperature is within the caulk manufacturer’s recommended range. When installing anything in really cold temperatures, screws or bolts should not be overtightened, as the ensuing expansion in warmer temperatures could lead to some binding issues. The performance of your windows can make a big difference in how comfortable your home is, especially during freezing weather. Air infiltration and drafty windows allow for cold winter air to leak inside your home. Besides making your house drafty and cold, your furnace has to run constantly due to the poor performance of your windows. The average home loses 25% of energy through old and drafty windows. The installation of new windows can significantly reduce air leakage, as our windows only allow .01 CFM of air leakage per minute. This makes our windows 23 times more airtight than the industry average. Argon and krypton gasses act as an insulating barrier, keeping the heat inside your home and reducing heat transfer. An application of low-e allows the sunlight to naturally heat your home so your heating bills remain low. Another layer of insulation comes from foam-filmed frames. Fusion welding on the corners creates an impermeable barrier against the elements, eliminating both water and air infiltration. Replacing your windows now allows you to ride out all winter storms in a warm, cozy, and draft-free home. With our Winter Worry-Free Installation Program, you can be confident our trained licensed and bonded installers will replace your windows according to our Installation Masters requirements typically within one day-maybe two depending on the amount of windows. The goals are simple…Stop energy loss, reduce your energy bill, while making your installation as comfortable as quickly as possible to mandated regulations. With the end goal in mind for you… is a comfortable home for you this winter? Don’t spend another winter wishing you would have replaced your windows sooner. Below, we’re sharing some insight on how we handle winter roofing installation for New England homeowners in locations such as Beverly, Gloucester, Danvers, Peabody and many other service areas. Roofing Installation Process: Ideally, products are installed in temperatures over 32 degrees Fahrenheit. If we have a colder morning-we wait a few hours to make sure we install to proper specifications to ensure the best installation possible. It is recommended by GAF to manual seal with shingle tab adhesive on the back of the shingle especially along with rakes, to the underlayment, and to each other for maximum wind protection. Installing ice and water shield underlayment the same day, as opposed to leaving the home exposed overnight and installing the shingles the following day. The roof is another area where energy tends to escape. Even in the winter, the attic should be close to the outside temperature. In the event that your attic has leaks, it will be difficult to maintain the proper temperature. Winter roof replacement helps to prevent heat loss in the winter as well as ice dams: In terms of energy loss, there may not be enough insulation in the attic. You can seal up small spots with low-expansion foam insulation. Air leaks are another problem. Roof leakage points include the chimney flashing, skylights, pipes, old shingles, or drip edge on the fascia and rakes. During the cold winter months, if your roof leaks from rain or snow, it is also likely to lose energy. Icy conditions and the freeze/thaw cycle can result in ice dams on your roof. When the roof becomes too warm in the winter, the ice melts off the roof and runs into the gutters, forming ice dams. Over time, ice dams can cause damage to the roof. The oreo effect also hinders roof performance and energy conservation. The oreo effect is the flip-flopping winter weather, where snow will melt and turn to the ice with more snow piling on top. In essence, this creates an Oreo-like ice-and-snow sandwich on your roof. Ventilation provides airflow through the attic space, maintaining the ideal indoor temperature to prevent ice dams. We install vinyl siding in the winter with the following steps: When working with vinyl shakes you need to cut them with a circular saw backward so it prevents them from splitting. When cutting angles, it needs to be cut with certain techniques to prevent cracks. House wrap is immediately done after stripping to avoid any moisture or any weather conditions that come in contact with exposed wall sheeting. New vinyl siding further seals the thermal envelope of your home. It is like adding a blanket of warmth to your home. Choosing our insulated vinyl siding provides you with more insulating power than fiber cement, wood, engineered wood, or brick. During winter, Craneboard Solid Core Siding offers exceptional performance benefits that include: Highest R-value cladding Insulates over wall studs to reduce thermal bridging Impervious to moisture, including snow It blocks heat transfer from occurring through the wood studs, preventing heat from escaping through the exterior cladding. As another superhero that can repel moisture, you'll want to install house wrap as a protective layer. House wrap prevents moisture damage, mold, and also reduces drafts by acting as a barrier. Can You Install James Hardie Siding in the Winter? James Hardie Siding is made of Fiber Cement making it extremely durable in extreme weather conditions. Fiber Cement does not expand and contract or become brittle in cold temperatures. The sealants used in our fiber cement installations are designed to install in cold temperatures and deliver the same protection when applied in the winter as they would in the warmer months. All-weather barriers and flashing components were chosen because of their performance when installed in cold temperatures.
