Frequently Asked Questions

How much do new replacement windows cost?2021-05-13T20:57:41-04:00

It varies greatly. There are many different factors that will influence the cost of replacement windows.

  • Are you getting double-pane or triple-pane windows?
  • What sizes are the windows?
  • How many windows are being replaced at once?
  • Does the window frame need work?
  • Are you looking for a special window style or design?
  • What kind of warranty will you be receiving?
What are the best replacement windows?2021-05-15T21:14:54-04:00

First and foremost, we like to warn homeowners of the infamous “Beauty Queen” window. These replacement windows look good on paper but are not necessarily the best quality. The unfortunate reality is that not all window products are manufactured in the same way.

What you should look for is the AAMA Gold Label which ensures that you’re getting exactly what you pay for with your new window replacement. The best quality windows are engineered with 100% virgin vinyl to prevent peeling, warping, and flaking from moisture damage. These windows also include an insulated glass package with argon or krypton gas, which helps your home stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Another important consideration is a window’s air infiltration rating, which is key to energy conservation. At Coastal Windows & Exteriors, our replacement windows have a CFM rating of .01 which is 23 times more airtight than the industry average. Learn more about the importance of Air Infiltration.

Which windows should I replace first?2021-05-15T21:18:19-04:00

If you’ve decided to move forward with only a partial window replacement, there are a few ways to determine which windows are of highest priority. First and foremost, consider the security of your home. Are you unable to completely close or lock certain windows? Protecting your home from intruders should be a top priority to keep yourself and family safe. The next priority should be to improve the energy efficiency of your home. Replacement windows will eliminate drafts and lower your energy bills, not to mention keep your home feeling cozy during the cold winter months and cool during the summer months. Which rooms do you spend the most time in? Consider replacing those windows first.

Do I need to replace all my windows at once?2021-05-15T21:19:28-04:00

The short answer is no, and the answer is for three reasons.  The best pricing on replacement windows can often be obtained when five or more windows are purchased at once. Another factor to consider if you’re replacing windows at different times, is that you may end up with a slightly different window design, if the manufacturer makes any changes to a specific window design in the meantime.

If you do decide to move forward with only replacing a handful of windows, complete your project by sections of your house (or by room) to make sure that if there are design changes it’s less likely to be noticed. Lastly, you will notice the best energy savings when your entire house is filled with energy star rated windows. According to the Department of Energy, windows and doors are responsible for 21% of air leakage in the home. In order to minimize this energy loss and maximize savings it’s best to replace as many windows at once as possible.

What are the signs that I need to replace the windows in my home?2021-05-15T21:20:45-04:00

Most homeowners know when it’s time to replace their windows. If you’re unsure, ask yourself these questions: Are your windows old or painted shut? Do you see foggy areas that will not wipe clean (seal failure)? Are the window frames starting to rot? Do your windows not function properly anymore? Do you have a hard time opening and closing your windows? Do your windows not lock properly? Are your windows single pane? Do you feel a draft near your windows? Are certain areas of your home colder than other areas? Are your windows more than twenty years old? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s most likely time to have your windows inspected.

Are your windows, siding, roofing and entry doors environmentally friendly?2021-05-15T22:15:52-04:00

We live in a rapidly changing world and global warming with the rising cost of energy have increasingly become major concerns for many.  Luckily for you can be the change you wish to see in the world with Coastal.

Windows: Our Soft-Lite Windows have a direct impact on lowering your energy bills and reducing your home’s carbon footprint. The Soft-Lite Elements windows are the highest-rated performing window in the industry exceeding all industry standards for energy efficiency as well as air and water penetration, and durability. Besides the energy savings, our vinyl windows are very environmentally friendly in other ways. The most important is that these windows last a lifetime – they don’t decay or rot. Low quality windows will soon end up in the landfill, but our windows stay on your home. Perfect Fit + tightest seal in the industry= reduced heating and cooling costs which reduces your carbon footprint. Solar Ultimate Glass can get a U-Factor down to a .16! One of the lowest air infiltration rates-.01 CFM-23TIMES more air tight than traditional wood windows! The Soft-Lite factory also is a good steward of the earth by minimizing waste and recycling all scrap materials.

Siding: Insulated siding fights thermal bridging by blanketing the outside walls and limiting energy escaping through the studs, increasing the overall R-value of the wall. The International Energy Conservation Code recognizes insulated siding as a form of continuous insulation in the 2015 Energy Code, and can be used as part of a compliance package to meet energy codes that are currently adopted. Industry’s thickest, energy-saving insulation delivers exceptional R-value {up to 5} performance (resistance to heat flow)….Benefit:  Reduces energy consumption, help lower utility bills giving you a warm and cozy home.

Roofing: We recognize that roofing is a petroleum product. We also offer eco-friendly solutions including products containing recycled materials, anti-reflective properties, and limited landfill waste options. We use recycled shingle waste to create new shingles and a Zero-Waste-to-Landfill initiative.  We also offer Cool Series Shingles which as Energy Star qualified are Class IV impact resistant. All of GAF shingles have advanced protection shingle technology which reduces the use of natural resources while providing superior protection for your home. Coastal Windows & Exteriors has been recognized by GAF and the U.S. Green Building Council as being an environmentally responsible contractor. To be admitted, a contractor needs to demonstrate their on-going commitment to sustainability by being part of GAF’s Green roofer program and successfully pass a written test and complete a Sustainability Assessment.

Entry Doors: Polyurethane Core reduces energy loss and decreases energy bills.  Our ProVia Entry Doors won Environmental Stewardship at 9th time recognition by Energy Star-the only door manufacturer to do s!  Our new door line called Embarq has .1 U-Value and dual perimeter seal for greater efficiency.  The factory also empowers “green” factory processes using low VOC

These are just a few benefits that Coastal Windows, Siding, Roofing and Entry Doors can help your home…and your peace of mind.

How Does Air Infiltration Impact Energy Loss?2021-05-15T22:27:46-04:00

Air infiltration is a big deal, and the most energy efficient windows are equipped with features such as weather-stripping, heavy duty airlocks, and other features to block out drafts. To add perspective, consider that the industry average cfm rating of .30 allows the equivalent of 24 soda cans of air per minute of cold air transferring through your windows in the winter. Compare that to Soft-Lite at just .8 soda cans of air per minute, the lowest air infiltration rate in the industry. If windows account for 10% of air leakage in a home, it’s important to have the lowest air infiltrated window on the market.

I hate how “drafty” it feels around my current windows and doors. Will my new windows and doors stop this?2021-05-16T21:11:40-04:00

Absolutely!  Windows & doors account for 21% air leakage in a home so make sure you get the best products in the industry to help make your home energy-efficient and save on your energy bills.

  • Our Soft-Lite Windows & sliding glass doors are designed for water and air impact to resist water and wind and that ultimately keeps your home warm, comfortable, and dry. Wind resistance is also tested by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association with a continuous stream of pressurized air at 25 miles per hour. The industry maximum for air infiltration for replacement windows is 0.30 cfm (cubic feet per minute) in order for a window to qualify as Energy Star Certified. The best windows on the market have an air infiltration rating as low as 0.01 cfm at 25 miles per hour. This is 23 times more efficient than most major wood window manufacturers such as Pella, Anderson, Marvin and Jeld-Win.
  • Our ProVia Entry Doors come with energy efficient Q-lon Weather Stripping. This protection runs along the top and sides of the door and interlocks for the most efficient seal and keeps moisture, air and dirt out of your home.
Do your windows and doors come in custom sizes?2021-05-16T21:12:39-04:00

Yes. All of our patio and entry doors are customized to 1/8” increments, allowing a perfect custom size application.

How secure are your windows & doors?2017-02-05T17:39:24-05:00

This is an excellent question. Windows & Doors are meant to provide shelter but no matter how good a windows or an entry door looks, its first job is to help keep you and your family secure.

Our Soft-Lite windows have hidden, integrated tilt latching locking systems which allows you to operate the windows in one graceful motion, using only the low profile lock lever. This tilt latch lock is engineered with a bolt type tilt engagement rod, which is stronger than the typical latch proving you with a more secure window. They are also Soft-Vents locks which can limit sash travel to allow for ventilation.

Our ProVia Entry Doors have a super tough 20 gauge security plate for extra strength and to prevent kick-ins. Installation is also crucial for a secure fit, and we always deliver best quality installs. Our ProVia entry doors also have Impact-Shield to protect your home from harshest storms and help deter burglaries.
