I don’t know about you, but I love when the Christmas catalogs start coming simply for the inspiration I find in all of the photos. One of my absolute favorites is Pottery Barn. They do such a great job of mixing classic design with natural and rustic elements. For years they’ve had these stocking holders that you can purchase that spell out a set word (like “Peace” or “Joy”). This year they have stocking holders that you can purchase based off the letters you want. I have a very simple way for you to create your own monogrammed version of this stocking holder… for a fraction of the cost that Pottery Barn is charging.
First, start with these items:
- Stocking holders. There were purchased at Michael’s. They were originally $14.99 but it’s crazy to purchase something for full price there. There is always a 40% off coupon on their website so these came in at around $8.50 or so. Here’s a photo to show you up close and personal how they look. They feel substantial but are pliable enough to go around various sized mantles.
- Letters. I’m leaving this vague so you can shop around for the ones you like best. These are unfinished wood letters but I’ve actually found some more substantial incredibly heavy cardboard ones at JoAnn Fabrics that would work as well.
- Paint. These were painted with Country Chic Paint in Devotion. It’s a chalk based paint that is non-toxic and dries incredibly quickly.
- Hot glue. This is simply to secure the letter to the top of the stocking holder.
This project is going to take you about the amount of time it’ll take you to drink a glass of wine. Truly. It’s almost embarrassing how easy this project is: paint your letters, let them dry, hot glue them to the stocking holder and hang.
These letters could have been painted or stained any color but I decided to do a red to go with the mantle’s apple accents. The nice thing about this project is that you can easily pop off the letter from the stocking holder and repaint next year if you decide to go a totally different direction with your color scheme.
Like the idea of personalizing a stocking holder, but want something a little different? Birch Lane had these great chalkboard stocking holders, that aren’t available anymore on their website. Simply purchase a mini chalkboard from Michaels and hot glue that to the stocking holder. You’ll probably want to purchase a chalk marker to ensure the writing will be crisp and not wipe off easily.
You could really do anything to personalize your stockings and make your mantle warm, cozy and most importantly, very YOU. Share your DIY stocking holder project with us here or on our Facebook page.
