Gardner was first settled in 1764 and officially incorporated as a town in 1785 after receiving land grants from surrounding towns of Ashburnham, Westminster, Templeton, and Winchendon. Located in Worcester County in central Massachusetts, this community was named in honor of Colonel Thomas Gardner, a Massachusetts war hero. Around 1805, Gardner became a major center for lumber and furniture industries, earning its famous nickname “The Chair City” and “The Furniture Capital of New England” due to its massive furniture production. By 1910, the city had 20 chair factories producing an incredible 4 million chairs per year, becoming known as “The Chair City of the World” and crafting furniture for prestigious locations like Buckingham Palace, the Boston Garden, and the White House.
Gardner became a city in 1923 and is the birthplace of the famous Heywood-Wakefield Company, which started in 1826 when five Heywood brothers began making wooden furniture in a barn near their family farm.
