Pembroke was first settled by Europeans Robert Barker and Dolor Davis around 1650 near Herring Brook and incorporated as a separate town in 1712, originally part of Duxbury. Notably, located about 26 miles south of Boston and halfway to Cape Cod, this Plymouth County community was named after Pembroke, Wales. Before long, European settlement displaced the Wampanoag and Massachusett tribes who had called the area “Mattakeesett,” meaning “place of much fish,” because of the annual herring runs in local rivers. In particular, Pembroke played an important role in early American history as the first town in the colonies to publicly rebel against the British Crown in 1740, and local minister Reverend Gad Hitchcock spoke out against British policies before the Revolution.
Over time, the town became a major shipbuilding center with five yards along the North River, building over 1,000 ships from 1678 to 1871, including the famous Beaver that played a role in the Boston Tea Party.
