How can you tell if your windows are drafty?
One way to tell if your windows are drafty is by holding your hand close to the window on a breezy day. You will likely feel air coming in from the sash, the frame, and where the sash meets the sill. You can also light an incense stick on a windy day and hold it near the same areas. If the incense blows around (even sightly) you likely have drafty windows.
It sure does! In fact, according to Energy Star, you can save over $500 in energy bills per year by upgrading from single pane to triple pane windows.
You won’t catch a virus from a drafty window. But if the window is drafty or the air in the room is too cold (heat and humidity is escaping), you may suffer from sinus problems as a result of dry air. This is prominently an issue that you can run into during the winter.
Drafty windows may cause condensation.
The best way to stop drafty windows is by replacing them. That’s because there may be air leaks at various points of the window. Air typically leaks from the sash, the sill, and where the sash meets the sill. New window installation seals up these air leaks and drastically reduces drafts. Other tricks like putting plastic over windows are only bandaid approaches.
