What’s the Deal with Ice Dams?

ice dam at work

Ice dams are a sign of underperforming roofing in winter weather. The process of ice dam formation goes like this:

  1. It starts in the attic where the area is incorrectly ventilated or not ventilated at all.
  2. Improper ventilation causes the attic temperature to rise in the winter. Your attic should be about the same temperature as the outside air, even in the wintertime.
  3. The roof becomes warm and melts the existing snow.
  4. The snow turns to water and trickles down the roof until it makes contact with the edge or your gutters.
  5. The water re-freezes and turns into an ice dam.

Why are Ice Dams Dangerous?

Ice dams can cause a laundry list of problems for your home as well as your pocketbook. They are dangerous on several levels for the following reasons:

  • Ice dams are incredibly heavy. The smallest ice dams can come in around a couple of hundred pounds. Large ice dams can weigh several thousand pounds.
  • This massive amount of weight can pull part of your gutter system or roof away from your home.
  • If your roof manages to stay intact with a heavy ice dam attached, you might experience a leaky roof in winter.
  • Roof leak detection is discoverable by signs such as yellow and brown water stains on ceilings or walls, wet attic insulation, and wet attic rafter beams.

Prevent Ice Dams and a Leaky Roof in Winter

Prevention is the best course of action to prevent ice dams and problems like a leaky roof in winter.

Here is a quick how-to in terms of preventing ice dams

  • Ensure that your roof is properly ventilated. You’ll need ventilation such as soffit vents that pull cool air into your attic space to make sure it stays at the correct temperature.
  • Meanwhile, you’ll need outtake vents such as ridge vents to push the air back outside.
  • You’ll also want to seal air leakage paths between the house and attic space, which can be accomplished with insulation

With ice dams at bay, your home will remain cozy and leak-free through the winter season.
