Stephanie Vanderbilt Featured as SBA Success Story: From Teacher to Award-Winning Business Owner

Just one year after being named the 2023 SBA Small Business Person of the Year for Massachusetts, Stephanie Vanderbilt, owner of Coastal Windows & Exteriors, is now featured on the official SBA website as a national success story.

Stephanie began her journey without any experience in the home improvement industry. Instead, she started with a deep passion for helping homeowners and a small desk above a warehouse. Lacking a background in finance, marketing, or operations, she turned to the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center (MSBDC) for guidance. With their mentorship, she created a powerful business plan and turned her dream into a thriving business.

Her background as a teacher of the deaf shaped her unique approach. Rather than using pressure tactics, she focused on educating customers about energy-efficient products and sustainable exterior remodeling. This educational mindset built trust and helped homeowners make smarter decisions about windows, siding, doors, and roofing.

Coastal Windows & Exteriors Grows with Purpose:

Stephanie grew her company from 5 employees to over 30.
Today, it stands as one of New England’s leading woman-owned remodeling companies.
Coastal has won multiple industry awards, including:

  • GAF President’s Club Award

  • James Hardie Service Excellence Award

  • Qualified Remodeler Top Satisfaction Leader

  • BONS Editors’ Choice Award (2023 & 2024)

Moreover, Stephanie continues to lead with purpose. She supports her community through initiatives like:

  • Roofs for Heroes – Donating roofing systems to veterans in need

  • Freedom from Want Thanksgiving Project – Providing turkeys and holiday meals to local families

  • Gift of Heat Program – Helping families stay warm during New England winters

In addition, she’s committed to empowering women in trades, serving as a mentor and advocate for female leadership in construction and remodeling.

“With the right mindset, mentorship, and mission, you can build something amazing—even if you start with nothing but passion,” said Stephanie Vanderbilt.
