When I last wrote about our project building a super-efficient, solar-powered home, my husband Tom and I felt exhilarated. After months of waiting and navigating permit delays, we finally received approval for our septic system and building plans. As a result, we closed on a beautiful acre of land in Salisbury, Massachusetts. At the same time, the factory construction of the home’s modular units at Keiser Homes had already been completed.

Breaking Ground on Our Solar-Powered Dream Home

We officially signed the land and construction loan on April 16. Just one week later, we stood in light rain around a muddy excavation site. Meanwhile, a small construction crew worked behind us. We posed for photos alongside our architect, builder, town selectman, and representatives from Boston magazine, Boston Children’s Hospital, and National Grid.

This marked the groundbreaking ceremony for Boston magazine’s Design Home 2014. Although the skies were gray, we beamed like sunshine. After all, it was the first visible step in building our solar-powered home.
