Remember last winter? The endless days of biting cold, relentless snow, and ice everywhere? I’ll admit it—there are two words that are banned in my house: Polar Vortex. I mean really, why did they have to give it a name?

Now I’m reading that last winter’s icy fury is making a comeback. That’s right—Polar Vortex 2 is coming, and it’s time to prepare.

So, What’s the First Line of Defense? A REALLY Good Shovel

Whether you’re clearing the driveway, the steps, or just the front walkway, a snow shovel is your first weapon against the cold. Even if you own a snow blower—and if you’re anything like my husband David, who uses it as an excuse to wear his “winter warrior” hat—you’ll still need a shovel for tight spaces and corners.

How to Choose the BEST Snow Shovel

I did the research so you don’t have to. Here are my favorite tips for picking a snow shovel that actually works:

1. Snow Play

Stay safe. Always bend your knees and keep your back straight when shoveling. Good form matters—you don’t want to be sore for a week!

2. Give it a “D”

Expect to spend at least $35 for a D-shaped handle with a bend. It’s much easier on your arms and shoulders than the straight kind.

3. Go for the Curve

A curved design helps you move more snow, faster. And let’s be honest—do you really want to be outside longer than you have to?

4. Material World

Choose a shovel with a fiber-core handle. It’s lighter than metal or wood, making it easier to lift and less likely to stick. Plus, those screechy metal-on-ice sounds? No thank you!

5. Try the Olive Oil Trick

Yes, Nanny was right—olive oil fixes everything! Rub a little on your shovel before heading out. It prevents snow and ice from sticking, and it even works on sticky door locks. Genius, right?

Don’t Forget the Roof! 🏠

Heavy snow can lead to ice dams and structural damage. Even if your roof seems fine, excess weight and poor drainage can wreak havoc.
