How to Save Energy in the Winter

It’s important to consider how much energy is lost with your windows, siding, and roofing during the winter. This image from the Department of Energy shows some of the most common areas of energy loss in the home.

common home air leaks

Where is Most of Your Home’s Energy Lost?

This is a breakdown of the amount of energy escaping (in the largest amounts):

  • Drafty windows and doors: 25%
  • Roof and attic: 25%
  • Walls: 35%
  • Flooring: 15%

Most of the energy is also lost via radiation—the transfer of heat from one source to another—and air leakage such as drafty windows. A leaky roof in the winter is also a major culprit of energy loss.

Here are ways to save energy with your exterior this winter:

  • Outdated windows can lose up to 30% of your home’s energy. Check for drafts around the sill, frame, and where the sash meets the frame. Make sure you have caulking around the frames and the window locks are functioning correctly to create an airtight seal. Opt for windows with Low-e, which allows the sun to naturally heat your home during the winter. Foam-filled window frames also improve heat transfer that happens through the frame. Heat transfer is much higher if your window frame is hollow.
  • Old roofing can lose 25%-20% of your home’s energy. You’ll need to make sure that all shingles are in-tact on your roof and proper ventilation is in place. Cool air is brought into your attic through the soffit vents and pushed back out via outtake vents. This is critical for maintaining a warm indoor temperature in the main living areas of your home.
  • Old siding can lose roughly 25% to 30% of your home’s energy. This is especially true if the siding is not properly attached to your home, or it’s constructed of old and deteriorating wood. Choose vinyl siding with insulated panels to insulate your exterior siding down to the wood studs.

In many cases, the best way to save energy is by way of replacement of windows, roofing, and siding. New exterior products made of high quality materials will help insulate your home and keep it feeling cozy.

Be sure to consider your IRS tax stimulus checks or your tax return 2020 to get ahead on your winter home improvement projects.
