Are you tired of seeing no color or life in your front yard or back yard when you look out your windows? I need to see color and life outside – not just a blanket of snow. Each week I even buy flowers to brighten up my world. Finally, I started wondering about plants that thrive and blossom in the winter and so I began to research. Here are five great plants that add greenery and will even blossom outside your window in the heart of this New England winter. ..
1. Flowering quince
If you’re like me and pretty much don’t have a green thumb at all, this is a good one for you. You pretty much cant kill this plant and it loves extreme weather climates and neglect. Bingo for me! Looks great along a fence and love the red flowers against the snow. Plant this spring for next winter.
2. Snowdrop
You can see these as an early riser in the winter landscape. They love to be planted in rock gardens and under taller shrubs. Make sure to plants these in the fall.
3. Camellia
These are my absolute favorite as they remind me of hot pink peonies. The best part is they surprise you after the holidays with a bloom in mid-January right before you get the winter blues to perk you back up…and they can live up to 100 years! These are best to plant in the spring.
4. Christmas Rose
Can you imagine having this flower welcome your visitors this winter along your sidewalk up to your home. Talk about curb appeal! It blossoms right before the holidays to dazzle your guests all the way through early Spring. They also can rise above piles of snow! Make sure you plant this one in the spring.
5. Witch Hazel
Best of both worlds with this one- fragrant in summer and little vibrant blazes of suns in the winter! This one can grow quite large up to 15 feet tall so make sure you find a good place in the fall for this one. Then watch it illuminate your yard come winter!
Check your local green house for additional hardy plants that can cross many zones and add some color to your backyard view! Please let me know what your view looks like out your windows. I have a bird feeder and will just have to watch the birds until I can get my hands on these winter plants come spring. I would love to hear from you. What do you like to see out your window right now?
