Hanging Old Glory is a great way to display love for our great country and it also adds a classic look to any home. While some people choose to fly their flag year round, others might only display Old Glory during specific holidays throughout the year.
Whether you choose to commemorate or to celebrate, here are few rules of flag etiquette:
- Raise your flag briskly & lower it ceremoniously.
- Never allow the flag to touch the ground.
- Do not fly the flag in bad weather.
- The flag should only be flown at night if properly illuminated. Otherwise, it should only be flown from sunrise to sunset.
- When displaying more than one flag, the U.S. flag should be flown to the observer’s left.
- If you choose to suspend a flag, whether horizontally or vertically, be sure the union is in the upper left.

There are a few days when it is recommended to fly your flag at half-staff:
- May 15: Peace Officers Memorial Day
- September 11: In Remembrance of 911
- The Sunday of Fire Prevention Week
- December 7: National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
- On Memorial Day it’s recommended the flag be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon.

As many of you mark Memorial Day the beginning of summer, let’s not all forget the true meaning and take the day to honor the brave men and women who put on the armed forces uniform, who allow us to sleep safely in our homes at night, and who died in the service of our nation.
