Choosing Your Roof Shingle Color: Expert Advice from HGTV’s Genevieve Gorder
Why Your Roof Matters More Than You Think
When you think about your home’s curb appeal, what comes to mind first? The landscaping? Paint or home siding condition? Windows? Shudders and trim? The walkway? Oftentimes a home’s roof is an afterthought, but in reality the roof can cover more than 50% of your home’s visible exterior and this can have a tremendous impact. A beautiful roof will not only enhance your home’s curb appeal, but it will increase its value. The Impact of Roof Color on Curb Appeal
When you do decide to move forward with a new roof, you’ll want to make the right choice to maximize curb appeal. A roof’s color creates different visual effects. Contrasting colors accentuate the roof, while complementary colors help it blend with your home’s exterior. For color advice, we turn to HGTV’s Genevieve Gorder, who shares expert tips on choosing the right shingle color.
To choose the right color, let’s consider the color of your home:
WHITE: Genevieve considers white to be the perfect neutral tone complimenting both warm and cool tones. White siding works well with any GAF shingle color. In fact, it complements colorful hues like blue, green, gold, and red too.
GREEN: Refreshing and reminiscent of spring, warm green tones like Spanish Moss pair well with gold, red, black, and warm gray shingles.
DARK OAK: A darker shade with a hint of green, it pairs well with warm brown, gold, red, and warm gray shingles.
SAGEWOOD: This mid-tone beige has the patina of weathered wood, a very popular and desirable look for exterior surfaces. Sagewood is a bridge joining warm and cool color families and works well with warm brown, red, and gold shingles.
RIVER ROCK: A light brown hue, this color pairs well with most tones, especially dark and warm brown shingle colors and contrasts well with red, blue and green shingle colors.
GOLDEN BEIGE: This color presents a simple and elegant contrast when paired with all brown shingle colors. For those who are a little more adventurous, try pairing with red and blue shingle families.
Before making your final choice, check with your neighborhood association if you live in a development.
