2014 Remodeling Trends

As home remodelers, we look at trends as clues to what customers will be looking for in the upcoming spring. We figured we’d put in this spiffy infographic to speed the process along. The big trend of spring 2014 is remodeling instead of moving. More and more couples, especially baby boomers, are aiming to remodel instead of move. Many couples are realizing that homes are becoming so expensive that if they were to move they need to sell their houses at the highest value possible.

This chart on the right shows some trends projected for 2014. First and foremost we see lots of landscape activity, it’s true that landscaping makes a huge first impression. So why is it a trend? We theorize the rise in DIY blogs and sites like Pinterest are getting people out of the house. People are building elements into their home like edible and native plants. Others still are inspired to hire landscaping companies to perform trendy eco-friendly services. Having a green home wasn’t really on peoples mind until a few years ago.

Some of the data on this chart is reflected from Remodeling Magazine. This is the most accurate trend report in the home improvement industry (they come out with a new one every spring). Entry doors consistently rank among the tops as far as home resale value is concerned. Also consistently ranking in the Top 10 of the report are windows and roofing, products we also specialize in.

According to remodeling magazine, there will be a huge increase in remodeling activity over 2013. Starting this spring there should be a 20.2% increase in amount of money spent. North Jersey, a publication covering suburban New Jersey, just published an article detailing the story of two baby boomers who decided that the money they got buy selling their home would not be enough to buy their dream home. In that case, they decided to make their dream home out of the house they have now.

There is a projected increase of 20.2% in total amount spent. However, the amount of total projects completed is only going to rise 7% according to remodeling magazine. What this means is that there are only a small amount of projects constituting a huge increase in sales, meaning that people are doing more big-ticket remodeling jobs. Last fall’s hottest trend was window replacement. This spring, what will be your project of choice? Feel free to explore the rest of the site for more inspiration.
