Lynne Greene of Lynne Greene Interiors has been designing homes for over 25 years and continues to get concerns from her clients on how to insulate windows. With the record breaking cold this past winter and the summer in full swing, people are increasingly focused on their heating and cooling bills. While the most effective way to reduce energy loss is to replace old inefficient windows with energy efficient replacement windows, new types of window treatments offer homeowners an additional option to further curb energy loss, without sacrificing style.
Lynne’s Advice…
Many people may cringe when they hear the word drapes and think of Nana’s house, but drapes have come a long way. Every morning you get up and dress yourself (hopefully) and if you think of your poor cold windows comparatively, how would you dress them to keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer? Maybe a nice neutral color scheme or a pop of bright dramatic color? Ripplefold draperies that give a more modern look or pinch pleated for that classic look? You can now consider them window fashions rather than “Nana’s Drapes.” Think about whether you want the treatment to only serve the purpose of insulating or if you want it to be a focal point in the room!
Shades and blinds are another way to insulate your windows while serving other purposes. Shades can keep the neighbors from peaking in at you at night, while blinds can allow some light to come in and keep the neighbors from seeing your business. Shades and blinds can let you sleep in on the weekends or let the new baby take longer naps during the day.
Lynne’s Go-To Products at the Moment…
Hunter Douglas, the innovator of the window fashions world, came up with two honeycomb products to address energy loss concerns for homeowners. The Duette Architella and Duette Trielle. The Duette Architella has a honeycomb-within-a-honeycomb construction traps air inside the cells and insulates your room from hot or cold temperatures outside. The Duette Trielle with IllumiCell provides similar light transmission as the original Architella shades, with 20% more energy efficiency – the most of any Hunter Douglas window covering. The new pleat size is the largest in the Duette honeycomb line. At 1 1/2 inches the larger size is perfect for larger windows and sliding glass doors.
