5 Ways to Cool Your Home and Save Energy This Summer

Want to turn off that cash-guzzling, energy-hogging A/C but don’t want to sweat it out either?  Here are 5 tips to cool your home and your family while saving money AND the environment.  With our help you’ll reduce that carbon footprint in no time.

Luckily, we haven’t had too many sweltering summer-long heat waves. However, you never know when one might hit, especially in August. With those hot and humid days comes those really high energy bills… (Sigh…)

Stay cool this summer with these 5 tips…

1.        Block Out The Sun

CoolOffWithoutACBlog

Our ENERGY STAR® qualified Preservation Windows feature high-performance glass packages. These combine options that reduce your heating and cooling costs while making your home more comfortable.

  • SST warm-edge spacer system with dual or triple-pane insulating glass units
  • The latest advancement in glass coatings Low-E glass with argon or krypton gas
  • UV-filtering multiple layers of silver and titanium combine to create high-efficiency glass. This glass offers unsurpassed energy efficiency, UV reflection, clarity, and damage and visible light transmittance.

EnergyMaxx glass features patented coatings that reflect your home’s heat back into the room during winter. At the same time, it repels the sun’s heat and damaging rays in the summer.

The result is added comfort and energy efficiency in both the winter and summer! For more information on our energy efficient windows.

2.        Your House’s Sunscreen-Reduce Thermal Mass

The best way to beat the heat is to block sunlight before it enters your house. Therefore, I suggest hanging blinds, shades, or drapes as an effective way to cool your home. Sheer drapes are a great alternative they direct sun rays to the floor while still letting in the natural sunlight we all love. Did you know that the color white reflects sunlight better than colors?   Stay tuned for next week’s blog on 5 Window Treatments That Can Lower Your Energy Bills.

3.        Your Big FanCirculate That Air

To create airflow in your home, use a fan unless there’s a natural temperature difference to move the air.
At night, use cooler outdoor air to help reduce indoor temperatures.
I love using ceiling or standing fans near windows at night.
They help pull in those refreshing summer night breezes and circulate the cool air efficiently.

Also, remember in the morning to close those windows as the outdoor air starts to heat up to keep as much of that heat out as possible.

4.       Solar Protection

Reduce the heat gained from solar radiation by applying solar-control window films that can offer your home some UV protection.  This may be a cost saving option to consider as an alternative to window treatments.

5.       Mister…Your New Best Friend

Do you own a mister?  If not, go out and buy one this weekend!  They bring on an evaporative cooling effect when water is lifted off the skin. Hide them near your fans for a quick spritz!

Lastly, an extra tip (learned from my Nanny!) is to put an ice cube or cool running water on the back of your Wishing you a cool and relaxing weekend!
