I’m so glad you’ve been following along with the progress on our Cape. We are without a doubt thanking Coastal Windows & Exteriors who performed all the work installing the replacement windows and the one new construction window with a lead-safe install. When we purchased our house it needed some TLC.

house before window install

For about four years after we bought our house we did nothing to the outside of the house. In the last six months we have made a major improvement to the outside by adding on a front porch. Our existing porch was rotting. Once we added the new porch, and the house started to look better, it became obvious that we really needed a center window on the second floor.

Here’s how the Coastal Windows & Exterior crew installed a new construction window:

Rocky, the Coastal installer we worked with, used the Dremel to make the cut-out for the window. He and Steve, another one of the installers from Coastal Windows & Exteriors, started taking off all the clapboard. Their truck was packed to the gills with everything they’d need to preform every job throughout the day. They set up their work station right on the street (we live on a dead end) where they could cut all the boards they’d needed to frame in the window.

All the clapboard was off at this point and it was starting to be really obvious what it would look like with a new window in the center of the house. For me this confirmed that we made the right decision.

When the crew pried off all the barn board they were left with a layer of pink insulation.

They pulled off the Tyvek and then cut through the drywall; this was the first view of the light filled closet!

Although there is limited storage space in the house, there was an original built-in closet in this spot when we moved in. The fact that it was always a closet explains why there was never a window there.

Once the guys broke through the clapboard, barn board and drywall, we were left with a window that was not framed. The guys had been working since 8:30am installing our replacement windows and by the time they got to this stage it was 6:30pm. The team Coastal sent was made up of three incredibly hard working guys that hardly took a break all day.

To finish the job they framed in the window with 2x4s and plywood so that the window would have a place to be secured to. After the window framing was complete the guys did a little teamwork action and put the window into it’s frame.

Here she is all installed! If you are a perfectionist you may think the upstairs window isn’t centered. It’s actually the front door. It’s nine inches to the right. We found this out when we were building the porch. We opted to correctly center the window in case we are able to move the door over at some point.

We are in love with all the new windows Coastal Windows & Exteriors installed for us! We would heartily recommend them again!

In addition to appreciating the cosmetic improvement the windows bring to our house, we know the return on investment that we’ll receive from installing these new vinyl replacement windows in the house will make them a worthwhile investment. As a rule the ROI from replacing windows is approximately 87%. And of course, we can’t forget that we won’t feel a breeze coming in through our windows in the middle of winter which will definitely help our heating costs.

Thank you, Coastal Windows & Exteriors, for helping our house become so much more of what we dreamed when we moved in! It was a pleasure working with you and it definitely helps us sleep easier knowing they were installed well and with lead-safe removal techniques!
